Tutorial: Dyeing stag

Very good tutorial Bill.
Was this piece too far gone to be used for a handle?
If not, how do you deal with the softer insides?

If you are going to get just one leather dye, I agree that the light brown is the one to get. Just remember-any of the leather dyes will penetrate more than the potassium permanganate.

Burl Source,
The stag could easily be used for a stick tang, with a butt cap. If the pith is too soft, you will notice it when drilling, and you can wallow it out and use extra epoxy.
I'll probably use this for thin pocket knife scales at some point.

I was directed to this thread as I had a question on dying stag.

This chemist would say potassium permanganate is not a dye. It oxidizes the stag and the KMnO4 is reduced to MnO2, which is brown.

We used the crystals rather than powdered in the lab. Less of a problem with dust. Small quantities, 100g or so, shouldn't have a dust problem.

Think HTH when you are thinking of KMnO4. Both are strong oxidizers.

Just an FYI jringo, but this is a six year old thread. You are correct that the info was excellent.

Look at the dates when pulling up a thread in a search.
