We seriously have to pay $10 to change user name? I did not realize when signing up that my actual name would be used as my User Name...………..

Have to pay for the Admin's time.
Signing up is all automatic and requires no admin time. So accounts are free.
But to change a user name requires that the site admin stop what he is doing, look up your account, and make the change. Time is money. So there is a charge for the time spent.
