
I can’t believe this needs to be asked, no offense to the OP, you were being considerate which is a great thing.
We really really shouldn’t have to ask ourselves if we can use a knife in a fundamental way for a purpose it was designed to do.
I personally wouldn’t have thought twice about it, it would be a natural reaction to use the tool I carry everyday for the use I carry it for. If some store employee said anything or looked at me like a loon, I would have given them the same look right back.
No one will make me change my behavior due to their perception.
On that note, I act like a reasonable and responsible adult, my conscience is my guide.
