Valid push cut test

When testing an edge by push cutting newsprint, do people on the forum

(1) start the cut with the blade a few of inches above the newsprint to get some momentum
(2) start the push cut with the blade still and just touching the newsprint?

It's easier to cut the paper doing (1) vs. (2) but I suspect people on the forum refer to (2) when describing a push cut.

I do #2 (I use printer paper. Don't have newspaper handy.)

same here. i use printer paper and sometimes newspaper if no printer paper is around. sometimes i start with the blade touching, sometimes not.
