VG7 steel

Are these Spyderco folders VG7 steel? And if so could you tell us what model?
Oops, maybe not. They were Super Gold. I thought at the time I could recall them being noted as VG7 but can't find that discussion now.

I'm especially curious as to whether the VG7 blade develops very small chipping out of the box. Both my VG10 and 3G F1s did, although it never happened again after the first sharpening.
I basically sharpened it out of the box. So I can't really tell you how the factory edge would hold up. I've got it fairly thin behind the edge, if it doesn't chip out I think that will be good for a stainless steel. I got a cheap microscope and saw more micro chipping in my knives than what I expected. You would feel the slightest snag in paper, but couldn't see anything with the naked eye. Just pocket knives, mostly S30V and M390.
Have you used the Lam Cos, 3G, or VG10 models prior to the VG7? If so how would you say this compares to those?
I do have an F1 in cos. I haven't used the VG7 enough to say yet. They are running the VG7 at 61 HRC, so it's the hardest of the bunch. I've never had any VG10.

After another couple of weeks I don't have any complaints. It doesn't hold an edge for a super long time, but literally two min on a strop, and it's ready to go again. It's splitting hairs, and I can still baton through oak kindling for the fire without any edge damage. I'll post a full review of the knife after a use it some more. For anyone interested.

How's the F1 VGWolf holding up?

About to get my 1st F1 and they are a little cheaper than COS. Might wait for F1 in Elmax, but to be honest, with my light Camp use, probably wouldn't notice a difference.

I can't complain. It doesn't hold an edge for a super long time, but it strops right back up. It doesn't seem to chip out as long as you're not doing anything crazy. I made a new baton using my F1 and esee 6. That esee with 1095 had some damage and was dull. The F1 had no damage and was still sharp. I like both knives, but the F1 out performed it. I also thought the esee would have an advantage just cause of its size, but the F1 with the convex edge seemed easier to me.

Thanks. I guess as you go up the F1 range you just get better edge retention for your money. And if the VGWolf is easy to sharpen or strop it’s no big issue to have to maintain it a bit more.

I’m trying to talk myself into saving money and going with F1 VGWolf rather than the F1x Elmax (classic I don’t need it, but I want it problem). :-)

Oh I get the want it and not need it issue. I strop with gunny juice, so it has a little more cutting power than the normal white or green compound. It doesn't take much to get the bite back. I've never had any of their Elmax, so I can't speak to that.

Agreed. Pay once cry once. I’ve recently got the little Falkniven Kolt in COS. It’s a nice EDC for hiking. Even that splits some smaller branches nicely.

I’ve got a KNIVES PLUS Strop Block, but will have to try that Gunny.

I got one bottle to try, and now I have 3 different grit sizes. I've used it on leather and I made some balsa wood strops. I think you'll like it.

So I just bought a double sided paddle strop, what two Gunny Juices would you recommend for COS or VG? I already have one green compound strop it that helps. Thanks

Still holding up fine?

I've never been a steel snob in any way shape.or form!!!! Steel has never been a factor, save low end crap steel. In a purchase!! I found LamCoS to be incredibly responsive to stropping! More so than any other stainless steel....
Retained an edge for a good , reasonable amount of time and stropped back to laser like sharp with a few.passes.on my 4 sided billy strop from Stropman... (R.I.P.)........Black, white & green rouge and smooth side leather finish..

Hattori, who makes all Fallkniven's fixed blades, makes such pretty designs and you can see the influence if you check out his site. He uses mostly steel from Takefu . The cowry-x is impressive looking stuff...

I definitely miss all my Fallkniven's that have moved on!! Only have my volcano and the juni! LamCoS and 3g...

Enjoy your blade! Looking forward to the review.... Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi! So in this case you think it îs worth paying 30% more for the lam CoS version of the F1 instead of the VG7? I don’t know what to do, I would like to save some money if the VG7 is ok but on the other hand I can afford the extra 40$, just don’t know if it’s worth in quality and experience difference.
