Video: I May Have Gone Too Far

Well, we're at one infraction and two warnings. Next taunt or name call gets it locked. Your call, folks.
We do prefer to keep comments civil here in Becker. Otherwise, it goes to Snark or gets official attention.

Do not close me and Rick got a Challenge
We call it Beckerdome
With or without Steel
Sorry 1 and all if I insulted or whatever
Out of Yukon but got some oil and a Sweeet Woman Let Me know how this plays out
Thanks for the Laughs

I'm sorry for letting it go this far, guys. All further posts from will only pertain to my OP. Despite all of this, I'm still quite proud of this video. It's been on my to-do list for a while.

Thank you, Rick. I will check out the video tomorrow.

You know, the real rule of thumb here is probably best stated as "What would Ethan post?"
Since I started moderating here, that's the litmus test I've tried to use when gauging other people's posts, and I think it's about as good as tests come.

I'm going to bed. Bladite is still stalking in the ether. Y'all can duke it out all you want. Just be willing to take your lumps from the moderation crew.
Ethan trusts us to try and keep the space civil, and we do it out of respect and friendship with him.
Maybe think about what you'd say at a campfire at his house.

it was a legit demo

Ethan would be proud i would think

let that sink in

mods have been inordinately polite and restrained

if further infractions are required, they will be harsh

let that sink in

Having heard some of the conversations... :D

Yeah, I had heard the story and believed it, however I never thought to try it myself. So I'm glad someone else did and video'ed it!

I'd be lying if I didn't say I take this video kind of personal. This issue has been on my mind for years. I hate to hear/read opinions about how "cheap" or "unsafe" Beckers are, and it always seems to be because of the scales. I hate to admit that I was one of the people that thought the same about the scales (scales only, never thought Beckers were cheap). That's why I did this video. I really wanted to prove the value of Ethan's knives. I just lost my cool when a few started to put it down. It's not just my word, or reputation being slammed here. It's Ethan's too, and on HIS forum. This makes me a little mad, as well. Again, I apologize for my unprofessional conduct. I can still learn a thing or two from E when it comes to criticism. He's the best. I only hope he appreciates this video as much as I am privileged to have made it.

Well said Sir

I think another point with the "micarta/g10/ grivory" debate is that micarta and g10 that are finished in a way so as to not cause blisters are 100% just as slippery as grivory when all are coated with oil/fat/blood-and any texturing that negates that slipperyness had better be reeeeeaaly well done or it will rip you up if you chop for a long time.
If it was me making the video I mighta made a Becker-gripped "stabber" out of mild steel...with no edges lol. Those weren't tentative stabs either, to have to rock a 9 point out. Cheers for going out on a limb with this one, Rick.

No, it's not safe to oil up your knife and stab a tree hence your nervousness and half hearted stiff shouldered stabs. The same reason you stopped swinging it into the stump. It was slippery. A couple more swings and your knife would have left your weakened grip. A couple of real stabs and you would have cut your hand. A hand full of oil on a smooth plastic handle is a recipe for disaster. You didn't prove what you set out to in my opinion. Watching the video and seeing where your hand ended up on those half hearted stabs and on those last couple hacks......
You May attribute your non accident to handle design and Mr Becker but the cheap smooth plastic did nothing for you. Perhaps a comparison to some g 10 or micarta? Please don't.

Someone's always got to find a way to tear things down. [emoji849]

If you think the test is invalid, I challenge you to do better and post it here. Sure much of this can be attributed to an individual grip, but the test is sound.

Rick I thought the test did exactly what you set out to prove. The Becker ergos, and grivory with a proper grip do work, period. Thanks.

Great video Rick. I had planned to do that test for my channel but you beat me to it.

I am glad you made it out safely, but I am honestly not surprised. Stock Becker handles are awesome. I love the Grivory (now Zytel) handles and leave them on all my Beckers. I have a few pairs of micarta that stay in a drawer. I won't get into my skills or try to have a measuring contest of any kind, But I have used my Beckers in many different situations where my grip on the handle may have been in question. The stock Becker handles have never failed me in freezing cold, blood, sweat, fish slime, or even when my hands were cold and tired and I SHOULDN'T have been using a knife.

Thanks for making this video and dealing with the ignorant.

Jeremy

Aside from what should be obvious, this video thread shows that so many people do not see what is obvious.

Should anyone really CARE that you didn't run toward the tree at top speed and do a parry, then full-force thrust into the tree?
No.
But, too many people live in their armchairs in front of their PCs. They talk of smaller caliber bullets being mosquitoes that no one is afraid of. They talk of carrying six knives and eight guns to be ready for the fight scene from their favorite Segal movie. When they go out in public, they carry a sword or an AK-47 because they CAN (and want to impress the cops with their knowledge of the Constitution and law when they get stopped and questioned for their stupidity). They spend hours prepping their knives to deploy in 1/100 of a second and shave hair, but never cut with it.
Etc.

I took the video for what it is: proof dispelling a myth that the knive will shoot out of your hand like a greased pig if there's anything that could be a lubricant on the scales.

I guarantee NO ONE who said this test was crap would be willing to take the place of that tree or log, even if you soaked your hand AND the knife handle in Amsoil synthetic 5W-30 for an hour before doing the test.

Some people get it.
Some people don't.
