Revmic: Now that I look at it more closely, the "front" side of the pivot pin on mine (the side visible in the pictures) has what looks like a steel cup washer with the pin peened over it. The "back" side has three stacked brass washers, with a more finished appearance. I wonder if the cup washer was an attempt at fixing the broken scale.
BobbyH: Thanks for the link re stamping. I hadn't paid any attention to the wedge (nothing like discussing an object to make you actually look at it), but it does indeed look like lead.
