3/32" 7018 stick electrode, at around 90 amps will make you a nice 1/4" weld.
Great to see so much interest in welding around here.
It's the roadmap to making more new toys!!!
Imagine the poor souls that undertake that "No Weld Grinder" project the hard way...without a welder... uphill both ways... in the snow....

Checked the local CL and the only good deal on a stick welder was a Shumacher AC/DC 240V unit. Given the newer inverter machines What kind of an advantage do the older transformer based machines have? There were half a dozen or so Miller and Lincoln machines but with a new 225 AC unit at $300 a used price of $250 isn't very appealing.
Also, is it difficult to set up a stick machine for TIG?
Zaph, Im not trying to knock any machine that I havent used (meaning the welders you are speaking of), and im not a pro welder but that weld would never pass a for me. Doesnt appear to have full penetration from low voltage. Dont know if its the machine or technique but you should cut one of those open and see how much penetration you have.
For a simple stick welder in the $3-500 range can I get an opinion on these options?

I just plan on doing things like making a table for my grinder, welding nuts on fixtures. Simple things.
Thanks!
If you check the dates, this is an old thread, which is generally frowned upon by the forum to resurrect. You might have better results by starting a new thread if the old ones don't answer your question. Can anyone recommend a Tig welder for light use and value for money please. When looking its a mine field and generally when I buy something I usually find a better product after. Basically it would be useful for re welding broken band saw blades that break on the weld and general light gauge. Any recommendations will be appreciated .
