Oh, two more good midsize knives are the Ontario SP-46 and the Cold Steel SRK. I think Fallkniven has some good midsize offerings as well.

The largest I've used on a shoulder strap is a Swamp Rat HRLM. I've also used ESEE 3, Swamp Warden, and Izula. All work. Depends on your needs. The right sheath with sufficient retention is essential.

I might go for the izula because of the many options for it. it can be mounted nearly anywhere, and fitted with all manner of accesories. Also its relatively inexpensive. If you want something a little more heavy duty you should check out the tops C.a.t. It has comfortable micarta scales and a versatile kydex sheath with a rotating steel clip that can be mounted either verticaly, horizontaly, or any angle in between. It can be had for $70-75 on knifepro.com or bladehq.com. Its got a 3 1/2" blade or robust 1095 hc. Do yourself a favor and check it out here. http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=34

It sounds like you want to take just one knife, is this correct? I understand the BK2 could be the only knife needed, but the strap issue.
Seems like adding an Izula to your strap, and tossing the BK2 into the pack would let you keep the bigger knife while out there.
I still will mention that something like the Bark River Bravo 1 is a medium sized knife, that's got cutouts in the tang. The Bravo 1 is suprisingly light. Add a leather sheath, so the Kydex can ride on the pack, put the knife on your belt when camping. Well, that's the way I think.
