Im not too much of a collector, but I enjoy high quality knives made in America that can handle some work. And that describes Benchmade perfectly in my opinion! From the Benchmade line, I currently only own a mini grip and a 940, but I use both regularly! What do you guys think are the top 5 must haves for any BM collection?

My very limited opinion. Doing this only a few years.

In no particular order.

710
73x
800
805/6
615

I'll leave the 5th choice up for free style. Some will say a grip of sort, others would say a 913/12 or a 94x. And many, many others. I might be in the 913 camp. or 94x camp....we might need top ten choices.

Icky, I think your list is pretty good. I wouldn't keep an 800 on the list if the 806 was there.
I'd replace it with a 94x, or 42.

710
615
94x
73x
800 (I agree on this if you don't have an 806)

Only five? That's hard. Here's the backups:

530
525
910
750
805

An original Chris Carrachi/BM AFCK

An original AFO auto

An original 730 Ares

A Leopard and last but not least....

An original Griptillian. JMHO :)

I've got 3 outta 5 just need the Leopard and the Grip... :)

Wow, only 5 choices? I'll do my best.

If I were to combine currently in production with discontinued and limited editions here would be my personal all time top 5 favorite must have line up.

806 AFCK
610 Rukus
630 Skirmish
810 Contego
710 McHenry & Williams

Very string runners up's being:
950 Rift
910 Stryker
425 Gavitator
730 Ares
940 Osborne Design

Of the currently and still in production knives my top 5 are:

810 Contego
275 Adamas
950 Rift
710 McHenry & Williams
806 AFCK (Last or next LE Run)

Discontinued knives my top 5 would be:

806 AFCK - CPM-M4 & D2 Variants
610 Rukus
630 Skirmish
730 Ares
805 TSEK

I could easily name about 5 -10 other discontinued BM knives that I would consider "Must Haves" but am trying my best to keep it short.

Sorry I couldn't just answer your question as asked. I hate it when people do that lol. But in the case of Benchmade they have produced so many high quality knives that set new standards for quality and tolerances in productions knives, So many innovations and designs that have truly stood the test of time that I just had to elaborate further.

Again my apologies.

Thanks Neuron. I owned a 943 for a short while and have to admit the hype is justified. I will be getting another 94x at the very least and is for sure a top five in most BM books. Top three to some.

I own two 800 and yet to own a 805/6. While I love the 800's, I feel the a Axis lock makes the 05/6 a different animal altogether. Not better per se', just different. I will say the 800's, for me, do not satisfy my desire for the 805/6. Both equally significant in their own right, the 800 to the 805/6 that is. I could even argue the 806 and 805 are different enough to to be put in their own individual class.

I also agree about the 42, speaking of a different animal. I think on some level I push the bali's from my mind. Im almost afraid to embrace, fearing an almost unstoppable obsession. That full Damascus bali. I forget the model #, really had me hypnotized. I felt a swelling desire for that one Ive only felt for a small handful. The price, exclusivity, and fact that I would never, never carry, was enough to talk me down.

5 is a tough number for sure. Especially considering the Limited's and Golds out there. I could make a list of 5 Disco'ed alone that are must haves tops.

That's the short list huh? :D ;)

Seems like I made it hard only saying choose five! This thread is definitely gonna empty my wallet.

710 (the original axis lock)
42
Griptilian (any flavor but I highly recommend a 550/555)
707 (kind'a like a mini 710 but different)

Excluding limited edition and discontinued ones and ordered by blade length:

  1. 707
  2. 940
  3. 275
  4. 710
  5. 810

Rather than "must have" I say "must try".
Everyone's tastes are different.

My favorites are

556 Mini Grip
630 Mini Skirmish (best blade/handle ratio of any production knife I've ever seen)
707
930 Kulgera
940

An original Chris Carrachi/BM AFCK

An original AFO auto
An original 730 Ares

A Leopard and last but not least....

An original Griptillian. JMHO :)

I've got 3 outta 5 just need the Leopard and the Grip... :)

Why an original? Which one is the "original? I am only curious as to what the importance is on that one? Thanks, Josh
