What is a lanyard for on a pocket knife?

I like the craftsmanship of the knife fob/lanyards and the different designs that you can find. I am an old poot and I like bling. I have a few fob/lanyards. Don't really need them, just wanted to add a few to the knife collection. Enjoy guys.

I really didn't have any cord that looked great with the sandblasted ti and Micarta and the couple decent beads I had were no match. I've still got a pretty big hank of this 550 camo, so I just cut a piece to fool around with. First try was a longish starter loop, then three snake knots, then a space, then five snake knots. I've got something similar on my AFCK and TSEK back at Post #29, and while lots of my bigger knives have long cords, it looked weird on a Sebenza.

Went back to a shorter starter loop, four straight snakes, and a short tail. I wasn't real pleased with it when I shot the pics, but it's growing on me. I like the starter loop long enough get a grab between the butt of the knife and the knots, but not so long that it can fall around the blade side of the closed knife. For me the starter loop should be long enough that it can hang slack when the knots are out of the pocket (my usual carry), and just long enough to loop around the handle's backside shoulder to tuck into the pocket when more discrete carry is called for.

I'd still like to find the right bead, though, and maybe some silver and black 550 cord.

A whole post and not even one use of the dreaded L-word.

Hahaha it never ends your (and your is everyone) always wrong with him.

Ah, but there is a very simple way for any of "it" to end. Be right!

I don't use fobs on my pocket knives. If they have clips, I don't need them, and if they dont, then the fob really doesn't have a function for me. And the aesthetics dont really work for me...whole skull bead thing......but, as they say, de gustibus.

There are many arguments for lanyard use on large choppers, and many techniques for the "correct" way to use those lanyards to minimize the chances for injuring yourself or others while chopping.

Amazing.

Thanks! I know you wanted the discussion to be more about what people do with their lanyards/fobs and less about nomenclature.

Do you have a preferred technique for a fixed blade chopper lanyard. Hooked on the thumb and around the palm?

How do you do it Marcinek? I have been doing a pinky lanyard (more the size of a fob :D) that allows me to back up a bit on smaller blades if I needed to chop (rare). I do have wrist lanyards I attach if really chopping with a bigger knife or if I am using it in an area/situation where dropping it would be bye bye. I've seen the wrap it around your thumb thing but never tried it. I don't chop much with my knives.

Joe, you should know what they are :grumpy:; everyone knows they are thingamabobs (sometimes referred to as thingamajigs). :p

I don't chop much either. When I do, I just use a "around the neck" lanyard, and whirl the knife around Hula Hoop style. It's the living on the edge kinda guy I am.

I have heard the around the thumb thing is a safety thing, like if the knife slips it just goes flying or doesn't go flying...I can't remember which. No doubt the W&SS folks could help.

That said, there is a fob someone did with a monkeyfist built around a large hex nut. Might be useful I guess.
