What is a Survival Situation?

imo, wilderness survival, as well as any other form of survival, starts taking place as soon as something out of the expected or planned activities begins.

if you're prepared, it just becomes plan b, c, d, or whatever;)

if you're NOT prepared, it can become a life threat.

for your specific question, wilderness survival...you're hiking, tracking a deer, mis-read a map, "thought" ya knew where you where, a storm blows in, a rapid weather change, you mis judge time of daylight...any of these things CAN put your bacon in a survival situation...

are you dressed properly?
do you have some rain gear?
do you have any water?
any warm drink mix?
do you have any extra gear to provide these things?

the list can really go on almost endlessly...the key is to have at the least the minimum gear to get thru this...so again, if you're prepared, plan b, c, d...

if not, you my friend, depending upon what cards you are being dealt...YOU MAY end up as a statistic:eek:

so, yeah, you gotz da gear yo!...

...next, do you know how to use it?
have you practiced/trained with it?
are you sure it works?
are you sure YOU can work yourself and your gear thru it?

"oh, shit, it got dark and i do not know where the "f" i am at!
temps are dropping almost immed after that big ass ball of fire goes down!
maybe you, in the "haste and waste" of things, twist your ankle or knee, even possibly both, and fall, on the way down to giving Mother Earth a kiss, you just cut your arm wide open:eek:"

all of this CAN put you in a "survival situation"...as a matter of fact... ANY ONE of these things can!

IF you're prepared, and have trained/practiced/and have gear you know how to use:thumbup:... maybe you add layer of clothes, patch yourself up a bit, get some bearings from your map and compass/gps...drag your sorry ass out to your camp, car, boat, broom, whatever...and just say "man, this trip sucked"

IF NOT...:confused::eek::foot::thumbdn:?????

What do you consider to be the qualifying circumstances for a survival situation -that separates survival from camping?

And...
By your own definition of survival, have you ever purposefully put yourself into a survival situation?

For the purpose of this thread -lets stick to wilderness survival (rather than urban)

Thanks in advance for your responses.:)

Also I must agree with Kevin about every day being survival. It really and truely is, especially when you started blurring the lines in your later post in this thread attempting to explain yourself better.

It seems to me that your scenario is basically stating that you willfully turn your camping trip into a survival scenario by leaving behind what are comforts and you revert back to what would essentially be bushcraft/primitive living/etc. skills. Which, once again if you really think about it, is everyday survival.

My theory with "survival" is when your planned trip takes a turn that you are not prepared for.
A recent example: last week two old people were found dead 700 meters from their stuck car. If they had walked 600 meters the other direction they would have made it.
No one knows why they ended up on that small road.

Lets say you and your friends are out camping. You end up next to a bunch of city people with the fanciest stuff possible. They look with disgust on your surplus gear and old used things.
Suddenly the weather turns really bad. The city people with their "fancy brand name" gear get their tents torn, their stuff blown all over the place and so on. Your team just secure your gear and stay in the tents and tell dirty jokes. The city people probably feels that it is a "survival" situation, your guys just have fun.

The situation turns into "survival" when you have problem keeping the "combat readiness" up.

Just "thinking ahead" keeps you away from survival longer.
