Try Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. One of my all time favorites, and no I'm not a chick-lit reader. It does focus on a young woman, but the main characters are well fleshed out and the story has some interesting twists.
Oh and Ren..., I think we may be located in the exact same place!
Well, actually I enjoy powerfull emotion in my reading. Among some of the titles mentioned I still apreciate Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Great Expectations by Dickens etc. I am also moved by the Victorian romantic poets like Byron: She walks in Beauty......When we two parted etc. I still feel moved by Oscar Wildes: The Happy Prince. Man!, I should open a book again one of these days,lol.
