What's the difference? "D" Guard vs Double Talon

- IMHO, the d-guard allows for a more aggressive approach to chopping/cutting whatever may be targeted. The variable of overall "grip" and it being an secure/protected extension of your arm is enabled by the d-guard to a tangible degree. Of course, how well it fits an individuals hand is the risk. The guard is bigger than previous models, so the risk of not fitting is reduced.

- A note on balance. From my view previous versions of the mistress are (purposely) blade heavy to facilitate the chopping force multiplier, in this case things may balance a little more. May not benefit chopping, but could lend itself to other attributes.

My thoughts on the d-guard pros/cons too. I knew I'd kick myself in the ASH:rolleyes: if didn't get both so that's what I did. NO REGRETS!!!

Hello everyone, first post here. Had to jump in with a few thoughts.

- A note on balance. From my view previous versions of the mistress are (purposely) blade heavy to facilitate the chopping force multiplier, in this case things may balance a little more. May not benefit chopping, but could lend itself to other attributes not previously offered by the historic mistress. An example would be while using it for a finer task, choked up on the choil. Even saying "using for finer tasks" sounds odd with this blade, but that may be why it becomes a real gem. And if chopping is really an individuals focus, a hatchet will eventually make its way into their pack.

- And this not being in INFI does not bother me much. I use an INFI SARGE7 and a SR101 RMDLE, both are rock solid. I bet this well balanced devastating mega-beast will fit right in!

- Being this is my first post, I'll risk going out on a limb. Just having a large steel ring attached to a knife presents some interesting thoughts. This is one solid piece of forged steel, that ring is likely very strong. There are many uses for a steel ring in the world of belaying, creating a pulley, etc. Not saying its made for that, just thoughts given its strength and putting on my "if I had to pick one knife" MacGyver hat. Ok, I'll stop now, getting too close to my zombie apocalypse crazy town thoughts.

And, now I'm thinking about a sheath...I'm sure that won't cost much :D

Great post, Ive been thinking the same thoughts but to lazy to type them.

One other thing , if you were in cold weather conditions and had to wear gloves I think the D has an advantage.

Welcome to BF! and the best knife community.

Cloven hoof salute to you, sir. That might just be the best first post here ever. Love it when the piglet has done his homework. Please post often.

Awesome first post!

I never considered the idea of using the guard for other things. Way to go Shllambom!

Probably everybody wishes that I would stop cutting bait and start fishing, get off the pot, drop the hammer, squeeze the trigger, "JUST DO IT!"

So that is what I did. I sent an e-mail to the nice people.

Thank you for all the help, advice, and counsel.

Nice!

So.... which did you go with???

Jeez! I am sorry I did not say before.

DOH!!!

I still have shop full of knife making equipment it would not be a problem to remove the D guard.

But as a former maker, messing with somebody else's stuff is like tagging the Mona Lisa.

You know?

Honestly, I was leaning toward the D GUARD. The thought of wearing a light leather glove while chopping or even batoning the guard would really "lock" in my grip.

I grew up reading about the Elmer Keith knife that has been re-done,by Dennis Friedly and others. I also read about the development of the COLT knife, (a similar one now being marketed by SOG,) that has the same sort of talons to hug the hand during hard use. (I will try to post info on it.)

I have also studied the Collins machetes which have a D GUARD. There have been many others in history that take advantage of the "wrap-around" handle design, all the way back to when knives were just rocks.

It was a difficult decision, but ultimately I had to bow down to the only principle that has never failed me in life.

"SIMPLER IS BETTER"

There are a lot of forumites with the smarts and experience to show me why I am wrong.

Since I am waiting for the telephone call that
finalizes my order, I could still technically
change my mind.

But, I chose the:

DOUBLE TALON BATTLE MISTRESS
WITH TAN CANVAS HANDLE SLABS
AND SAGE COLOR BLADE COATING

Did that make any sense?

Shane

My second choice would have been the D GUARD with black and red G10 and a black blade coating.

Thirdsies would have been a coin toss for either knife but
I would have gone with the muddy blade coating , and tan canvas handle slabs.

The COLT knife I was referring to was the JUNGLE COMMANDER. When it was released there was a lot of material bout it's development, especially the handle shape and material.

I originally ordered the D Guard about an hour after it went up (saw it go up right before having dinner with my gf's family, so I just waited till the gift opening and such). I knew I wanted a Battle Mistress, don't really have a knife in that size range. I think the D Guard looks cool and would be great on a knife that was being used for brush work and such, but when I saw the Double Talon I knew I'd be more inclined to use it while it would still give extra protection to my hands.`So I changed my order to that, and I'm pumped. Waiting for this next probable release.

I've used a D-guard machete. Hated it. That's a big reason I went with talons. I think the Busse d-guard would be much better than the machete's, but the guard didn't really accomplish anything.

Talons, all the way, I tried to hold out but I couldn't. Tanker grey and bruiser g10 double talons

I chose the double talon guard over the D-guard for weight reduction. I figure if I'm in a situation where I need a fully covered handle, I can always attached a paracord one to it. I'm also in one of those 'commy' places where the D-guard is illegal, so it really wasn't a choice for me, but I still would have chosen the double talon.

Congrats! Makes sense to me, since that's what I went with as well!! 🍻

I have several black coated blades already, and my other two "Op 2 weeks" orders are a Jackmandu in tanker/black canvas and a Hell Razor in tanker/tan canvas, so I wanted to keep rolling with more variety. :)

If I could made it happen my order, would have been two of each. Two D guards with tan and sage, and two DT's with Tan and sage. Then I could get double holster rigs for each set. 1 for formal wear with black leather and silver buckles, and one for outdoor casual wear in plain russet leather with brass buckles.

Wa-cha!

Do you wear knives this big to formal occassions? That's pretty intense.

Oh yeah man! I am a big guy. I got lots of room to hide stuff. Just don't ask me where my pepper spray went. Have not seen it since Halloween!

Trick or Treat!
