what's the point of collecting knives?

I'm baffled that anyone would collect fragrances since colognes and perfumes make my skin crawl.
I have no interest in baseball and don't understand why people would collect baseball cards for anything other than a money thing... I'd sell 'em in a heartbeat.
Some people collect cars, I never would. I'll never spend more than $2000 on a vehicle and insist on having a crappy car in this pretentious, materialistic society.
Watches? Stamps? Barbie dolls? Zero interest.
I love tools, though, particularly antique woodworking tools.
Whatever floats yer boat...

Maybe I'm the only one, but it seems pretty bizarre to get into knife collecting because you heard some game designer collects knives. That's far weirder than collecting knives because you like them. Collect what you like, not what people you like, like.

There is some primal urge to aquire the most basic, useful, and valuable tool that man has ever known until the gun came along... But you can collect them too!

No reason, just because I want to. If you don't want to, nobody's making you.

I can't understand why people spend thousands on video games/consoles, or who collect Air Jordan athletic shoes, or lunchboxes, etc., but that's their desire.

Different strokes for different folks.
My side, I don't see the point. But that's just my preference being a user more than a collector.
It may be different to someone else

There are MANY reasons to collect knives, not everyone collects knives for the same reason.

Some collect them for the same reason some people collect stamps or coins. To admire them, talk about them, clean them enjoy them aesthetically.
Some collect them because they use them either for their hobby or job. Check out Virtuevice's channel on youtube, he is the perfect example of this. He has many hunting/skinning knives. He sharpens them and takes care of them himself, but he also depends on them a lot for his hunts.
Some collect because they think they're cool and practical.
Some collect them for more specific reasons like just EDCing, tactical (maybe they're in the military or self defense instructor/student) hunting, etc.
Some collect for more multiple reasons listed above.

I collect them to use and to admire. I have many knives, but I tend to use only a select few, the others I baby and admire. They are called "safe queens".

There is no wrong reason to collect knives (unless you're doing something illegal with them) what ever reason you have is fine. I know people who collect knives and never use them, they collect them solely to display them, and that's fine.

I personally like that knives have so much variation. They are one of the oldest human tools and one of the simplest, yet they can serve in so many different functions. They are pieces of human history, they can save life, they can take life, they can both be an extremely functional tool while also being a piece of art worthy of of being a museum display. They have been used to change the course of history, yet you can purchase one for a buck at Walmart. They come in various shapes, sizes and materials and are highly customizable.

Not2sharp hit the nail on the head

some people are collectors.

I very much enjoy subtleties and detail oriented products and things, but I am not a detail oriented person. I very much enjoy the symmetry and craftsmanship found in knifes and fire arms as well as engines and machinery. This alone draws me to them and makes me want to "collect" them because i think they are beautiful just like artwork.

Another member here mentioned they collected fragrances. I too have a small obsession with fragrances. My sense of smell is hands down my strongest sense, more so than sight, hearing, taste or touch. when i go somewhere i remember the smell more than anything else. I enjoy fragrances because of this and have a small collection of them. Yes, leaded oxygenated race gas is one of them :)

some people collect, some don't. its just that simple

Who cares if there is a point. If you have disposable income and like to spend it on golf, do I have to give a crap? It's your money, if you are happy with your balisong, more power to you. I think you should go on a car forum and ask why anyone needs anything other than a Prius hybrid, what is the point of having anything else. Oh brother.

Guns are more basic, useful, and valuable than knives? I can understand valuable, but useful? And besides some novelty folders, guns are less basic than knives due to all the moving components involved in guns.

Because it's fun. Period. No other reason than I enjoy it. To me, it's functional art. My wife collects Christian Louboutin shoes, Jimmy Choo shoes, Louis Vuitton handbags. They are generally way more expensive than most of my knives. I like guns, knives, cars, investing, wine, etc. Everyone has to have an interest. If not, life would be boring.

I like them mainly just because I think they're cool. I use a few of them every once in a while, so it's not completely pointless for me to have them. :D

I like knives. Having more knives is better than having fewer knives. The only limiting factor in my accumulation of knives is my wallet.

I don't consider myself to be a " knife collector", I consider myself to be a "knife user" and a "knife aficionado". I use some of my knives regularly but I have more knives than I have use for. And yet, I still want more knives.
