what's your thoughts on A.G. Russell knives?

WARNING: Do not buy AG Russell folding chef knife hocho. This knife had bad quality in workmanship. Even though I am a big fan of Japan made products but I am greatly disappointed in this knife because it's not consistent and each knife quality is different from one another. I know this because originally i bought one and saw that the second bevel grind was wavy so called in for exchange. At first they tried to challenge me because they said it's not a defective product even though I have given special instructions to only ship my knife with even grinds. Long story short, after a few going back and forth, they were willing to ship me a return label. So I paid for another one of the AG Russell folding hocho same knife and the second one came and the beading on the detail was bad and the mechanical parts were made really poorly. Then I shipped that one back, and finally asked them to ship me another one but this time I was willing to pay for shipping here to call it my last final test to see if I was able to get one that is at least a good quality. Well strike 3, the last one shipped to me, the second bevel was 1.5 mm shorter than my first shipment. What that means is having that 1.5mm shorter is equivalent to having that brand new knife sharpened 3 times or more. When buying this folding chef knife, expect that it's a cooking knife and far from a show piece. Greatly disappointed.

WARNING: do not buy A.G. Russell folding chef knife hocho expecting the beading on the detail to be good and mechanical parts made unpoorly. <--huh?
Pfffft - did any of them CUT FOOD like you wanted them to?

Any knife can cut food, it's about paying attention to details. How many knives do you own that has wavy grind, poor locking mechanical parts, and looks unfinished because the knife has protruding metal that should have been grind down to be flushed with handle? Just because this knife is in the category of chef knife does not mean quality or attention to detail has to be cut down. Next time make sure you buy a knife that has poor workmanship on it and asked the company to ship you the one's that looks unfinished or the grind is not straight because in your point of view a knife is a knife and it's all made to cut something.

Pictures please.

See, when a really, REALLY new member attacks an icon of the knife world who has a superior reputation, something besides his or her unsupported word would be helpful.

Seeing is believing I guess. Yes the fact that I am a new member voicing out does not make me any less of a person giving an opinion, the high school days are over where the new comer apparently is the target. I am trying to upload image to show but it's asking for a link and don't know how to do it. what happened to the sites that just let you upload? You're speaking of A Russell like he's your uncle or a family member. There is no need to be bias in these forums. Obviously people come to these forums expressing their true feelings of what they see in the product. Besides in AG Russell's own words on his site, he stopped making knives himself decades ago and he just sources out all of his knives to be manufactures in the US, Japan, and China to have other's make it for him and him just using his name to stamp on the knives. I never said AG Russell knives are not quality when it's made by his hands, but the fact is that when you outsource your goods to be made by other people and you're just stamping your name on it, we'll quality control can be an issue. So take it for what the facts are and not a bias one.

You are not less of a person, but you are less of a credible witness. You are a stranger. You have no pattern here to show credibility.

In the real world, reputation counts. A.G. has one. You do not.

Not to say that even the best cannot screw up. "Even Homer nods" (The philosopher, not Simpson.)

I am merely applying the practices that normal people use in deciding what weight to give to someone's testimony. I can't look you in the eye or feel the grip of your handshake. No one vouches for you.

You may turn out to be a most respected source of information. That would be to the good. Until then, where are the pictures?

Quality control on knives that A.G. Russell puts his name on is, in my experience, very good. If for some reason you get a knife that either slipped through quality control or that you are not satisfied with for any reason, you can return it.

The verdict is in, and looks like Judge Judy favors the person who has pictures to show it. Again this is not a battle of how a person fights to protect a BRAND, but it's a case of knives not made up to par on quality. Case closed.

Not exactly. Production knives can and do have variance, that can include a variance in the blade height. That is what you are measuring. 2.##mm isn't unheard of. Probably just a bad batch, it happens. Not worth seething over IMO.

Just to make things clear, that was the third knife that was shipped to me. So yes, many bad batches and again, if you call yourself a knife collector, you would know that production knives are to be made in a jig so every knife is consistent, if you don't know anything about this, go on youtube and watch snody knives, that guy will teach you a thing or two about production knives. Apparently those production knives are not made in a jig so yes, you will get what you called bad batches and bad grinds, and in fact too many to count.

mm measuring in your argument is to brush things off, how about bad workmanship? Did you not see the handle where the metal is not grind down to meet the tip of handle? Is that normal too or just lame poor excuse to say, detail is not important?

There is no need to be part of a forum where it appears that everyone here is a AG RUSSELL cult, even a photo shown is not enough to have everyone seeing it for themselves. WOW I would be shocked that anyone else new would want to join because this forum is clearly a BIAS cult. With that said, I warn everyone that comes to this forum to stay away, you will only get one sided point of views.

In this forum, if you get a poor workmanship knife, expect that everyone here will tell you that it's your fault for buying the knife in the first place. LMAO

I'll echo your last statement. I am indeed laughing my ass off. There's a whole world of nits out there for you to pick. What if the next shirt you buy has AN ERRANT THREAD?! Will you be able to wear it?
You bought a chefs knife. Not a $10,000 art knife. Did you honestly buy that knife to hoard it away and collect it? IMO, if it slices food, what's there to complain about?
Master Collector, let me ask you, why does the difference in edge to spine measurement matter so much to you in this particular case? Do you just want the actual knife to match the listed specs? Ya know, it's ok if the measurements don't match the specs, and it's ok if 2 production knives aren't the same exact size. As for the problem you had with the handle, could you post some more pictures? I can't really tell what's going on there.

Nothing needs clarification here. I am not invested enough to have things that need brushing off, nor do I have an argument. I merely stated what I saw in your pictures, no one is assigning blame to anyone. Looks like a nice red herring though. Seems like you just came here to pick a fight, which I would highly discourage for obvious reasons, but it's your choice. Your own statements are pretty weak and you are reaching quite a bit here. Remember, you are the one that came by here and started down the path.

Yes, we are a giant cult because more people have in fact had good experiences than bad with AG Russell. Come drink the Kool-Aid. I actually wanted to see what you were talking about at first because it sort of is a rather rare experience that someone gets poor service from AG Russell. If you got frothy mouthed with them, the way you are here I can see why things may not have worked out all that well for you. You stated your case, now you are beating the horse to death. What exactly is your point again? You got a knife, and it wasn't to your personal level of satisfaction. Noted, thanks. Sorry for the luck but it happens sometimes.

One last thing, if you don't like the forums here that is all well and good, no one is forcing you to stay either. So using your language "just to clarify things" coming in here being a pretentious blowhard and assuming to know what this place is all about is ridiculous . The petulant turn your posts took is unwanted, unnecessary, and not going to work either. Just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't make them wrong. Good Day.

Master Collector:

You joined BF, & have 8 posts to your credit; all them whining, & negative in nature. Did you join this forum, just to cast your negativity against a highly respected dealer in the knife community?

FYI: On one side, you have a group referred to as "OPTIMISTS" who see the glass as half full...& then you have the type of personality that just can't seem to find a silver lining in anything they see...those people are referred to as, "PESSIMISTS". It's quite clear, which category you fall in to.

Maybe if you'd actually try to use your kitchen knife for what it's intended (to prepare food with), you'd be a much happier person.

M.C.- You've conveyed your feelings to the point of nauseating redundancy; can we PLEASE, get the OP"s thread back on track? Unfortunately, I have a feeling, that we'll be seeing several more of your negative comments...

Thank you!

It's easier to be real than to be fake. For all the ones commenting on this subject matter, put your money where your mouth is, buy two or more of this knife and then come back to this forum and lets see if you're still in a cult.

I have had at least four or five folders from A.G. Russell. Excellent knives; excellent company. NOT to worry.

Perhaps one day I will have your extensive experience of Cutlery Manufacturing:

"Apparently those production knives are not made in a jig so yes, you will get what you called bad batches and bad grinds, and in fact too many to count."

Or maybe NOT! :p

Did you ever think of asking for your money back? A.G.'s guarantee insists that you are a satisfied customer.
Why not try that?

I believe you that you aren't happy with the knife. And there could very well be some manufacturing issues with that model.
But after receiving three replacements, I don't think you can fault AG's level of service. And if you still aren't happy, for ultimate satisfaction send the knife back for a refund.
