Farm life never stops. My dad grew up on a farm in upstate NY and they had dairy cows, young cattle, feed business along with crops. Always lots to do. I would go up during the summer and help with hay but not much. My grandfather wasn't fun to be around. You could never do anything right and all he did was yell and cuss at you. I went up for the summer when I was 16 and when I came back home I told my mom I won't do that anymore. Its a hard life.The twice-annual barn mucking. I've been taking a shine to this little rascal lately and, of course, completely trust its performance despite being on the thinner side than my preferred users. Nice to be done with the job before some more rain blows through.
The pellets are wood scraps from the lumber industry that saturate with fluids and aid in decomposition (compost for the gardens). The white powder is diatomaceous earth (DE) that keeps insect larva at bay in the bedding.
And the little one helping organize the piles.

Well same here. As well as hold the light wrong. LOL Dad would ask for something and I would bring all kind of crap except what he needed.

Fortunately it's a gentleman's homestead for me, so not sink or swim. We want to raise as much of our own food as possible. Fiber for the wife to knit clothes. And my little girl to grow up with strong connections to outside, chores, problem solving, tools and machines, animals, food, life vs. death, etc.
I count my blessings every damn day.
Which includes these nifty little hunks-o-metallurgy;
