I'm thinking about getting a H&R... But which one? I'm looking for an EDC nothing to heavy preferably one blade, two is alright though. CV is good, if not SS (or whatever the H&R version on stainless steel is.) For an EDC its not gonna see anything to tough just cutting rope maybe some fruit, you know. Also, whats a good website to buy H&R products?

Thanks

Smoky mountain is the only place beside ebay I know that carries them.

I've had good luck with www.collectorknives.net . I just bought a 3.5" Jen & Rooster whittler in Stag with round bolsters. Disappears in the pocket, the blades are crinked just right (nice and tight with NO rubbing! :D), and the fit and finish is excellent. It has one more blade than you're looking for, but I believe I saw a 1/2 Congress there, with just 2 blades. The owner posts here, and I've read good reviews of his business.

H&R's are very nice. Something to keep in mind is that Boker and Olbertz actually make them; so Boker, Henckels, or Bulldogs are good alternatives made in the same plants.

This year at the Knife show in Atlanta I talked to the pople at Frost Cutlery and they said that the Hen & Rooster brand used to be made by Boker, but they got too exspensive and they are going with a smaller company. I don't remember the name, it started with a "C" or "K" and I know he didn't say Olbertz.

My feeling is Hen & Rooster is just a name, it is built in the factory of Frost Cutlery's choice. It doesn't make someone want to have "brand loyoalty". I did buy a few there that were made by Boker, but that might my last Hen & Rooster, at least for awhile.

if you want a hen and rooster, look for an original, though the boker knives are ok, the ones made by klaas before boker are nice too. the best are the originals though.

parker/frost or whoever has made a new copy of that cm-9, so make sure you get one stamped *bertram* germany on the back if you aren't buying it from ag russell

Bertram made nice Hens a few years back

How do I know which is which, and how would I identify an original? I'd like to get a stag H&R in the 3-1/4 to 3-1/2" range, but don't know how to tell them apart.

Thanks.

Good questions I would like to know as well.

What is an original?

They still produce great knives. Most of them you can tell who made them by holding them in your hand.

Here as some fine current production models.

And one that was worth it's weight in gold back in the day.

the best way to start is if there is a shield or blade etching, it is probably not an original Hen and Rooster. like i said in the other thread, the only etchings i have seen were on the ag russell excelsior models for the collectors club had gold etchings, but i do not believe Bertram( original stamp *bertram* or C. Bertram) ever etched their blades

also the only shields i have seen on originals once again were the knife collectors club models having bullet inlays, cm-6 has an arrow inlay shield

these posted pics are all knives made through parker/frost or whomever. the links posted by BACMAN99 are original knives marketed through ag russell, older knives do not have the same markings as the ones from ag russell, most of them either have *bertram* over germany, or ag russell. you will see some of the 107 vest pocket skinners stamped rostrei over germany(maybe solingen, i don't feel like pulling one out right now) Second hand info tells me these were "sold out the back door" of the Bertram factory while they were being produced for his catalog

Thanks for the information. That helps me get started. I do have a current model whittler in stag that I like. Just the right size, proportions and blade shape. I would like to start looking around at some originals, just to see what they were like.
