Who makes the best Peanut?

I've looked on Derricks site many times at those Northwoods, but my Case chestnut bone has served me well for just about everyday for two years, it's always with me no matter what else I'm carrying.

I also have a Damascus stag I like very much

I frequent Derricks site and i have to say those Northwoods Peanuts look amazing! On my must have list! I love Case Peanuts but these Northwoods are something special!

i don't doubt that northwoods makes a good peanut or knives for that matter, but i can't get into the stag look on their peanut handles.

I love my Northwoods Norfolk. Great knife and I plan to buy several more Northwoods patterns over time. But I feel exactly like you about the Northwoods Peanut. I would be very interested in that knife in a different handle material. There is something about that knife in stag that doesn't appeal to me. I don't care for it but many people do and that is the cool thing about knives - something for everyone.

Maybe one day they'll make one in snake or cocobolo wood or a cool jigged bone. In the meantime, I'll continue doing business with those great people as they have several other patterns that are very enticing. ;)

in your opinion, who makes the BEST peanut?:-)

which peanut DO you like?
:-)

I vote for the Pearl handled Case for today

I was gifted a deep red jigged bone Case. It is always in my pocket, hence my favorite. Since then I have purchased a few more & my favorite of the newer 'nuts is this one, Arctic Ice Peanut by Case (pic borrowed from the 'net):

I also like the Pemberton by GEC quite a lot. :)

I was a big fan of the AG Russell until the shield fell off in my hand. Didn't even appear to have any glue on it. Schatt & Morgans are nice.

I have a customer that has several peanuts that I sharpen for him frequently. He has a Case, and a Boker. Last week he brought me an Imperial from RI that had synthetic pearl colored scales, a "pinch" indentation on it and a hole for a bail. Have never seen an Imperial peanut before, and was intrigued about the "pinch" as it was away from the nail grove on the larger blade. (it was a 2 blade peanut) The little knife was in excellent shape except for a couple of rust spots that came off easily with some WD-40 and 000 steel wool. He found it in some things that belonged to his wife's dad. Tried to convince him that I had misplaced it :D, but he wasn't buying it. (or selling it)

Guess I am going to have to find me one to add to my collection.

Blessings,

Omar

Case has the widest choice of scales (materials and colours), good for a gift if you want to "personalize". The quality is still quite reliable. Their Tru Sharp stainless steel doesn't get much love but it performs very well and needs next to no maintenance. The best finished Peanut would be A.G. Russell's Pinched Peanut, a true beauty at custom level quality (but much pricier than a Case...).

Actually, the Peanut is one of those rare patterns that everybody seems to do well. CASE of course, RR, those Northwood stags do look very decent and the AGR knives. Schatt & Morgan /Queen did what is called a reverse Peanut I believe, but I was never actually sure what they meant by this......:D

On the secondary market - you could also look for a KaBar Peanut. I got one as a gift some months/years ago and I really like it. Also Ulster made a Peanut sized jackknife which is pretty great in general as well.

Beside the current setups by Case, Buck, Schatt & Morgan etc etc I would also take a look for the Oldies & Goldies.

just dropped my case chestnut on the pavement for the first time.:( went down hard, but got back up with a few little nicks on the bolsters. i dropped it trying to be suave and close it one handed. :p

You are suave simply because you carry a peanut, cards94, nothing more is needed.:D

what a great sales pitch, and thank you. that little nick is bothering me a bit now. maybe i should try buffing it out.

I think all 3 probably cost me less than $15 bucks

> Between an AG Russell Pinched Peanut, and a GEC Pemberton which would you pick and why?

Most people here end up buying more than just one knife:-)

You decide which features are a priority for you:

Pemberton
steel: 1095 carbon steel
handles: search
price: search
origin: USA
secondary blade type: pen

Pinched Peanut
steel: VG10 stainless steel
handles: search
price: search
origin: Japan
secondary blade type: wharncliffe

search on keyword Pemberton to find many photos and comparisons with Peanuts.

then post a photo of the knife you buy :-)
