Why are people cutting so much cardboard?

I guess I figured a big percentage was simply "finding" something to cut with a knife, but thought I was missing something. I can understand cutting down very large appliance or furniture boxes.

I suppose I am just too pragmatic to cut on things that dont need cutting and dulling knives for fun. I never understood why so many folks cut paper either. I can tell when my edge is right by seeing if it will catch on a fingernail.

I think some above may have also hit the nail when they mentioned youtube. A follow the leader scenario.

remembering back and I can never recall my father or grandfathers/uncles ever searching out things to cut with their folders. or unecessarily cutting on cardboard when simply cutting the tape would suffice. I suppose times change.

It is fun and satisfying to cut cardboard with a sharp knife, just as much as whittling a stick! That being said, cardboard is horrible for dulling edges, and I hate getting glue residue on my knives because I use them alot for food prep, so I either use a utility knife or a jiffy cutter with the razor blade for box duty.

I don't know why I'm surprised about this. where I am I can pile whatever by the road, and they'll take it. course I'm not a jerk about it. I setup it up to be easier to remove for the fellas workin.....
Just checked the town's site, and it doesn't mention a size limit anymore, so I guess I'd only need to cut stuff down if it doesn't fit in the bin.

I cut up boxes fairly small as I bag the recycling stuff before putting it in the bin. Otherwise the garbage truck tends to either not shake all the material out of the can or it will fling some out on the sidewalk and the guys won't get out to pick it up.

Most of the times you can step into the carboard box and kick the corners to destroy the box. Then fold with hands. This way you don’t even need knife to cut the tapes.

But we got all kinds of boxes at work you cant step into. Those are just handier to cut with knife (I use tuff lite).

Also I trim down boxes when shipping things to make them to smaller in size.

I have NEVER cut up cardboard with any of my knives.
That’s what my utility knife is for!! 🤔
Don’t get it?? 🧐
John 😁

Oh, here we go. Next week will be the thread "Why are people kicking so much cardboard?" 🤣 Followed by "What shoe and what rubber compound is best for kicking cardboard?"

In my job, I'm confronted with about a dozen large boxes multiple times per week.
These are too big to fit into the recycling bin when collapsed flat.
What's in the boxes? Cars?

I can fit a pretty big box in these bins. Maybe I'm just a master folder.
