Why do knife people like using fancy words??

Seriously, this intrigues me. Why do knife people like to make mundane tasks and objects sound really important? Instead of saying they want a knife for self defense they say they want a "tactical" knife. Maybe it's from youtube. Guys reviewing a pocket knife and trying to sound sophisticated?! How about this gem...DEPLOY! Seriously?? Deploy?! Hehehe, man, you are opening a knife! Deploy....por favor! :) can you imagine being out fishing or at work and asking your buddy to hand you his knife and he asks "would you like me to deploy it first"? --I like to imagine that quote with a Napoleon Dynamite accent.

Ok, if you like using ¢50 words to describe your knives don't get bent out of shape. (I admit to using these words myself on the forums. Words I would never use in real life). Anyway, this is a light hearted joking look at our collective neurosis and nonsense. But I really am interested in hearing others take on this behavior. Also, I know there are TONS of funny terms being used other than "tactical" and "deploy". Chime in with your funniest examples and we can compose a short list and laugh at ourselves and each other. ;).

The goal of this thread is humor, not controversy. Keep it real, but keep it light. :).

Blood groove is my favorite.

And you sneer at people who doesn't have the same opinion as your for fulfilling your abused childhood also? Common guy this is a knife forums, if you want to argue for logical better go other place. Some people here bought 5,000$+ sword and some even more. Is that make sense for most people? probably not. But at least whatever they do are more respectable than insulting others here.

This is an ephemeral thread the will wind up elsewhere. My intuitive countenance tells me so.

I'm with you Surfinggringo, LOL.

Just the other day I was explaining to my wife why a particular knife would be better over another and I said, "Well it handles wood processing better." I shite you not my wife looked at me with that "you are starting to sound like an idiot" look that all wives have reserved for their husbands, and she retorted with, "You mean it cuts wood better, right?" I hung my head in defeat replying, "Yes, it cuts wood better."

It all comes down to people wanting to sound educated, even if they aren't. I fall victim ever now and again as was noted above. LOL

 Sigh...I did everything I could to clarify that this was light hearted and in jest. If this is going to create an issue for folks then could the mods either close this or move it to w&c? Honestly was not my intention. Sorry for the trouble.

I'm with you Surfinggringo, LOL. Some words are way over used, to the point where they become laughable, like tactical and deploy and blood groove. It's all over and not just here in the knife world. For instance (unrealted to knives) the military really got on this kick where they refered to changes in the military as "a paradigm shift" when they could have simply said, "our changing mission." Another one they really over-use is "Explosively formed penetrators" when they used to say "a shaped charge."

It all comes down to people wanting to sound educated, even if they aren't.

It kind of reminds me of George Carlin talking about airline travel. You should check that out!

Ok, I get it. I removed the part where I went off. The only thing included is my expereince with word play and its meaning. Check it out. LOL

EXACTLY!! Hahahaha. I've gotten caught by my girlfriend like that a couple of times! :o.

I'm thinkin' I better get my axe tactically ready for deployment so as to efficiently process that cord of fibrous botanicals in my backyard before the lock.

I encourage people to use a full, proper grammatical lexicon whenever possible. This helps someone not sound like a caveman, or sniveling second grader's first composition assignment.

Honestly, there can be some excesses when it comes to describing knives [especially in the "tactikool operator" arena]. But they are usually few and far between.
