Why no love for the Ontario Gen II SP46 Survival Knife ?

I've been wondering the same thing. Not crazy about the SP46, but I have been eyeing the SP50:

Seems like a direct competitor to some of the medium-sized choppers out there. For a big ol' slab of 5160, you can't hardly beat the price (about $75 or so, depending on where you look).
I like the look of that one more than the 46, too. Not a bad price, but I'd rather have polypropylene than kraton. I find kraton wears out pretty quickly compared to the rest of a knife, and can cause blistering with extended use. Not so with with poly.

No real reason other than that particular knife doesnt appeal to me much at all
the blade is not what I like , the handle material Im not fond of , the guard shape is .. got to be changed for me :)
that being the case Im sure that it lives up the rep of the knives made by the company and its no slouch at all , its just not what I prefer .

IMHO, folks here try to ignore Ontario largely for the way they handled the whole R.A.T. thing. I do, anyway. It's kind of a shame, too, seeing that a good deal of thier stock is still produced domestically.

That handle wreaks of Toooj's design(he was at Ontario a number of years ago). There's a Kabar Cutlass Machete hanging in my shed with a handle very similar to that one. Kabar>Ontario

Although, that does look like a fine knife with a comfy handle.

Beckers get lots of mentions here as do Ka-Bars so after looking and reading about the Ontario Gen II SP46 Survival Knife I have to wonder why they aren't ever mentioned ?

The dimensions look perfect for a camp/survival knife, it has a great looking full flat grind, good steel and heat treat and is sold at a great price......why no love for these ???

Thanks PitDog....I got one on the way right now ! I'll let you know what I think after I get it in next week !

I have to wonder about the shape/width of the tang hidden in that handle. I haven't heard of one failing, but it's nice to have a full frame tang as on a Ranger. Anybody actually ever seen one of the Gen II tangs?

I like the SP53, which also gets no love. Looks like it would be a great chopper.

A review of the SP-50,which probably has the same tang/handle design. Looks like it can handle a bit.

SP-50

Buy me one and I would love it! Looks like a great design and great width before the 2ndary bevel, but only from what I can see in the picture. I'm going to check this out at Blade Show, thanks Pit!

I had a SP46 and I absolutely loved it. I traded it and a folder for a custom and I regret it! I find it to be a better knife than the Becker Bk2(I have one). Its thickness its prefect for for slicing and the kraton handle really feels good in your hand. IMO. The sheath does suck but I had a custom leather one made.....that sheath is actually on the trade forum right now because I no longer have the knife. :(

I ended up getting the GenII SP42 & it feels good in the hand & it's very light for that size of knife ! Can't wait to give it a try !

I have a now discontinued SP-11 bolo... it is one hell of a chopper and is a very solid knife! I will be buying more from this line.

Myself, no love for the Gen II SP46, but I'm about to show some for the Gen II SP45. Now that's a nice looking camp knife.

The sheath looks like it blows, but at the price point, it's well worth forgiving.

I just called the company itself, and the rep stated that newer sheaths won't be out for at least another year. She said they should be "better form fitting". Not sure if that means kydex, but I'll take any improvement. She also said some distributors like knifecenter should be able to sell the new sheaths separately. Good news (if she had her information straight).

I know this is an old thread, but, I have the SP47 & absolutely LOVE it. I only paid $53 for mine + $3.50 shipping. I have batoned hard with mine with no issues so far.

From what I've seen (about to order the SP45), the new Gen II SPs from Ontario are a home run. Wish they paired better sheaths, I'd buy multiple.
