Wife hates my Tilley Hat... Are there any full brimmed hats that actually look good?

I have a couple of hats made by Filson. I have the tin cloth packer hat. It's made of 12 oz. fabric that's been waterproofed and can have more "wax" applied to it when

it needs more. It's made from 12 oz. fabric that lasts a long time. They have a 2.25 or 2.5 brim. They're Great in snow or rain.....they'll keep you dry!

I have 3 of them. I've have 1 for about 20 years. Filson.com.

Filson also makes a couple other types of hats with a brim.

Also 27, also wear a Tilley, girlfriend also hates it.

Tilley has lots of styles (many more than they did back when I bought my first hat) and some of them are less ugly than others. As others have mentioned, there are lots of other hats out there as well. Here's the thing though: As you mentioned, we just live in a time where full brimmed hats are not the norm. Nowadays, we can't wear a good hat without being seen as a nerd, or a fedora style hat without being termed a "hipster". But you just have to ignore all that. For the better part of the last century, men wore hats and for a good reason. And just like everything else that has come back around, hats will have their turn. Instead of waiting for them to become acceptable again, just BE THE CATALYST of that change. I'm right there with you.

^Amen to that. I wear a coachman's hat on a routine basis (think like a top hat but shorter--looks less formal) and it definitely stands out. But it's a damn fine hat and keeps the sun off my neck and the rain out of my fact. And it looks good--it just doesn't look "normal."

I have that exact Stetson mewolf1 showcased. Been wearing Stetson's for over 40 years and never worried about what anybody thought. I have a close copy that's a little softer (crushable) I picked up at REI this year while my household stuff was in storeage. I've worn that Stetson in 100+ temps with no problems, and it sure keeps the rain off.

I love my Tilley. Functions excellently, and I think it looks just fine. My GF thought it was dorky at first, but she doesn't mind now, and she prefers me in it vs. a boonie.

I've been looking to try one of those all mesh upper with broad brim hats for more cooling while hiking, but I think my GF draws the line there. I might give it a go anyway... it's my head after all... :D

ETA: I wouldn't mind trying a Tarp Hat one of these days. But they look like they'd be a bit hotter than my Tilley.

I have a Tilley, and it is very comfortable and works very well.

BUT.....there are two things I don't like about. To me it screams 1)Old Man and 2) Tourist. I just looks to "nice"

I personally really like the Real Deal Brazil Hats.

Just one question. Since you are choosing to 'dress' to accommodate her tastes (likes/dislikes), does she do the same for you? Exp: If you want her braless in a tight form fitting dress and very high heels to show her off does she accommodate your tastes ;)

Get a ranger boonie hat. Put a bunch of little branches around the hatband. You will be so camouflaged, she won't even notice you.

Crap, just take your wife to a hat shop and see what she'll accept. If wearing her choice or hat is more painful than her destain for the Tilley, then keep wearing the Tilley. Otherwise, wear what she picks, or at least compromises to. She likely won't divorce you over a hat, and since you already have a wife...who you trying to impress?

Frankly, I don't care what I look like in my Tilley. It's comfortable, keeps my face, ears and neck from getting burnt, and the foam padding really helps when you smack your head on things. At 6'5", I hit my head on a lot of stuff. For a while I even considered wearing a helmet on a regular basis, but it reminded me too much of my childhood years.

My wife hates when I wear wide brimmed hats as well. I don't get it, it was only a generation or so ago when it was expected for a man to wear a hat, now it's frowned upon. Who makes these fashion rules anyway?

I have been rocking a felt hat for 20+ years. They are not as cool as my straw hats, which I believe can be both cool, and classy looking.

I have narrower brim straw fedora hats, and wide brim.

I like Jackson and Havana pattern straw hats.

Weatherproof makes a nice straw hat, and mine has held up to full submersion time and time again. It is my fishing hat, canoeing hat, and my camping hat.

I wear an Outdoor Research Helios hat when I am hiking or kayaking, but I wear a palm straw hat otherwise...think beach bum. I had never heard of "The Real Deal" hats until this thread. I love the look - just ratty enough to wear all the time like my beach bum palms that I usually wear. I just ordered a "Real Deal" hat about 10 minutes ago and it will be here next week. Thanks guys, for opening my eyes to an all new product. Oh, and I wear a Resistol Palm when I ride.
