Wood for a handle

Hey gang, Got a swordblade needs a new hilt, only wood i have to hand is leftover crepe myrtle from when i made a staff.
It works well as a long heavy hittin' stick, but I;m not familiar with its properties outside of that.
Anyone know if it's resilient enough to make a good handle?

What is the diameter?
There is usually a soft pith in the center of myrtle.

its around 2 inches, gonna be seating a 6" tang, about 1.5 centimeters

If you aren't planning on getting hit in the handle, it should be as good as any other.
