Wood Splitting - Tool Advice

A lot depends on the wood. I split lots of knotty sycamore and locust in my youth, w/ sledge and wedges. Sometimes, I'd have to pound in 3 or more wedges just to get the split open enough so I could cut the cross-grain with a machete. Earned my second bicycle that way.

for a bunch of old guys ;) I'd think you'd come up with this solution faster. a 16 year old or preferably 2 with splitting mauls. Nothing will split wood faster than two teen boys trying to out work the other! I knew some guys growing up who used wood splitting (everyone around heated with wood) to strength train, or to prove how tough they were. Plus they are cheaper than a splitter. I'm gonna go hide now before someone tries to put me to work:)
