WW2 sword help

A good friend of mine's dad was in ww2 he brought home a sword off the battlefield.

It does, but we're just seeing the kashira of the handle.
Can't really tell you anything from that 'cept it looks to be a genuine ww2 handle.
 
Hard to really say based on two pictures but so far it looks like a typical shin gunto mounts on a typical shin gunto blade.

It might be a worthwhile exercise but before doing that I think I'd check out Rich Stein's Japanese sword index. It may well be that you can identify the sword without taking it apart. I haven't seen anything to this point that would indicate it is anything other than a machine made shin gunto. Rich posts here sometimes perhaps he will be along to add an expert (as opposed to my completely amateur) opinion.

whatever you do, do not attempt to "clean it"

more pics of the blade, and remove the tsuka if you can. if you dont feel comfortable doing that tell us where you live and you might have someone close to you that can look at it.
