This is a WWII Royal Air Force Dinghy Knife. It belonged to my uncle, who served in the US Navy in WWII.

That is interesting.

I can understand the extreme lack of a point and big handle, but why so many holes?

Is the handle designed to float? Looks porous like a tough foam rubber material.

Hi, the handle is made of cork, sealed with some varnish , the one I have seen was well preserved.

Has anyone found why the holes ? The big one on the round tip seems redundant with the hole in the handle if if is all about knotting a string, and the 7 small holes make me think of a cheese knife, where holes are designed to avoid excessive " stickiness" between blade and cheese, but RAF surviving packs probably did not include parmeggiano or ementhal wheels....
