My grandfather was a Marine. His unit was first into Nagasaki after the Bomb. He brought this sword home. I recently inherited it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Based on background information alone...I'm just going to guess that it turns out to be a Japanese Military Officers Sword. Which were usually recycled from older Katana, they would cut the tang (so they would be a regulation length) and re-haft them. They were common war trophies of the time.
