I only worked with D2 once, making a camp knife. 3/16" thick and about 5 3/4" blade. I used it just as it came from the supplier - probably Jantz - don't know if it was annealed or not. I found it quite agreeable. No problems either before or after HT. Nice, consistent, and just as fast as other steels, if not easier.
I approached that build thinking it would be a pain in the neck, but I was pleasantly surprised.
