Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

10B36 is more resistant to the hammer than leaf spring.
This is the end of my first hour.

Eta: 2nd hour - drew the taper back down to a shade thicker than my starting thickness.
Getting VERY sick of my 4# fiskars demo hammer.

ETA2: hour 3. 35" OAL, 28 blade. 3.25" at the widest - going to try for a little more, but not going to get much. Need to stretch it another 1.5".

Holy Moly, Vik!
This is gonna be cool.

I'm a big fan of my 2.5# hammers from the dude at Hilltop Forge. Not cheap, but *excellent* tools. I'm planning on picking up a dogs-head bevel-forging hammer too.

Yeah - considering tomorrow is supposed to get up to 36, I may be done forging on this one.

Preheated the anvil, then hammered in shallow bevels. No extra stretching, metal was cooling too fast.
Profiled, knocked down the scale with 60 grit, and flatted the sides/removed most of the hammer marks with 80 grit.
120 grit tomorrow, then scotch Brite belts before HT

So at the recent Beckerwest, I had a chance to play with a big Bolo I’d made years ago and I thought I should own another monster blade with Becker scales😁 This time I went with a Bowie!!! 1/4in 5160 and a near 2 1/2in wide blade make up this camp monster! It’s 16 3/4in overall with an 11 1/8in blade tip to scales. Weight is a still very manageable 25oz. Gonna be fun cutting and splitting firewood at camp👍 I also went large on the sheath utilizing some .125 thick Kydex I salvaged years ago. Dang near indestructible package!

What'd you use for the rest of your tent stakes? 😅

Wow, thats huge...
Is the sheath setup for horizontal belt carry ? :p😁😇😂

Seriously, impressive skills!
Sheath?
Tempted to make the scabbard out of smashed PVC pipe covered in leather and set it up for baldric carry.

Got wood?

Just received my first batch of K&G stabilized stuff. Lots of weird things! Most of the unexpected stuff is from my girlfriend's property:

Some curly maple and cherry burl:

And some swamp/marsh alder and black birth limbs/"trunks":
