I don't know why edges Up isn't a useful grip in a utility situation, I generally Do grip my knife that way, but thats why I asked. I was curious?
I prefer Seeing my sharp edge, when I cut things, so I know where it is.
I guess I pull up, more than push down.
Spine forward seems most natural to me when drawing and especially resheathing (with kydex I “catch the tip” in the mouth of the sheath and then push the knife all the way in using the spine for a guide). Most of my folders naturally open edge down in hammer grip too and I am usually drawing my knife to cut forward/down/away from me (cut a branch off a tree, open something in front of me on the ground or in my hand) so muscle memory seems strongest that way too.
I guess if you were constantly cutting strapping it could make sense to carry so you draw edge up and don’t have to flip it. The DEK handle is really comfortable and secure edge up or down, it would work in either position.
