4.1 thread

An insanely lucky SOB in the Facebook group got his factory second 4.1 in 3v yesterday.

Come on preorders!!!!!

And now it looks like a 4.1 factory first just got sold in the Facebook group. Those guys have all the luck!

I will say that I got pretty darn lucky. Looking forward to getting it this coming week and hopefully my Factory 2nd 4.1 in D3V will ship soon too.

Haha. That's cool. I've gotta ask though, how do I find said Facebook group?

It's a pretty good group of guys and you can pickup some pretty decent deals off the page. I picked up a GSO 6, 7/7 #02, a 4.7 in CFV, along with the 4.1 today off the page the last few months. Trades and purchases have all been great for me. The 4.7 I picked up for $115 because it was a user.

I received the Out for Delivery notification for my Factory 1st Gen 2 4.1 that I picked up on Sunday off of Facebook. I think the mailman is going to think I'm stalking him...lol

Is "Second Generation" a Survive term or something the internet made up?
On the Survive web page it looks like they use the design date, which would make all these Second Generation knives post 2015 knives.
I mention this because I've seen videos of Survive knives that were made by BRKT that predate the "First Generation" knives.
Are there any other generations out there in addition to those three?

I can't wait to hear about this one bud!

I'm not 100% sure what the answer is. Maybe it's the 2nd generation of the GSO series? I've heard the use of 2nd generation and new spec terms being used to describe the next generation of GSO's that have been released so far. I believe it's just the 2.7, 4.7, 5.1, and now the 4.1's that are rolling out.

The wait is killing me..lol We usually don't get our mail delivered until noon-2pm pacific time.

The wait is painful!
Please do side by side photos with the 4.7 and FK once you get it.
Photos first, then we'll allow you to use it! Haha!

Grrr.. Just got it and it's a 4.7. Well, I guess the wait continues for my 4.1 from Survive. On the bright side I have the 4.7 in CFV, 20cv, and 3v. The guy sold it for a decent price and offered a refund. I think it was an honest mistake.

Ahh crap.
I was really hoping it was the 4.1, but at least you got a good deal on it. The 4.7 is still one of my favorites so I'll take it if you get tired of it!

Let's see... Guy's first models were prototypes finish-ground by BRKT in December 2011, not sure how many there were of those but they were all gone by March 2012, GSO-4, 5, 6... there were only 28 prototypes of the GSO-4 made:
June 2011 - Guy is looking for feedback on his designs: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ooking-for-feedback-on-up-and-coming-products!
December 2011 - Guy is offering his BRKT-produced prototypes for sale: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...O-series-of-Knives-by-SURVIVE!-CHECK-THIS-OUT!!!

Wow, that was a good deal. Did you know that only 28 of those GSO-4 prototypes exist? Fun fact.

I would not be surprised if the prototypes were all made by Larkin mfg. http://www.larkinprecision.com/knife-grinding
I would also not be surprised if the later models were produced by them, they are popular in the knife industry (e.g. Fiddleback production models are made by them, though the handles are made by Nathan Carothers).

In early/mid 2012, Guy unveiled his new EDC-4, the first "production" model: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/989763-SURVIVE!-Knives-EDC-4

Later that year, Guy began offering pre-orders for the GSO-10 (first gen) and the GSO-5.1 (first gen) while he worked on a second run of the EDC-4 which turned into the GSO-4.1. By November 2012, Guy opened up pre-orders on the GSO-4.1, this would qualify as "first generation": http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...SURVIVE!-Knives-EDC-4?p=11475980#post11475980
He originally promoted it here as another run of EDC-4 but it changed form before he finished: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...DC-4-Preorder-Promotion-Would-you-participate
Here is where the revision comes out: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...SURVIVE!-Knives-EDC-4?p=11467396#post11467396
Here is where Guy states that he considered the EDC-4 to be yet another "prototype" though it was a larger production run than the original knives: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Would-you-participate?p=11479670#post11479670

From where I am standing, the EDC-4's were the prototypes. If you are looking for some reassurances, there are plenty of great reviews on the EDC-4 now, from various sources and the GSO-4.1 is simply a revision of that model. If I developed my ideas and did a run of GSO-4.1's on my own dime, I would have no incentive to offer a preorder promotion. All of the CNC files are based on the computer drawing, so the final product is always more or less an exact copy, as with all of the other knives I've sold in the past.

Now, there were some changes from the first-run of the GSO-10 to the second - slight alterations to the handle contours, extending the "thumb-ramp" on the spine, new sheath design - so you can tell a first-gen 1st-run 10 from a first-gen 2nd-run 10, but I am not sure one can easily tell apart the runs of other first-gen models, which includes the GSO-3.5, 5, 6, 7/7, necker, Necker2 ...

THEN Guy moved operations to ID and designed the "second-generation" of models that were in the Starter. I think that is where we are making the division of 1st-gen vs 2nd-gen - the major revisions in handle designs and sometimes blade-designs also, new sheath-maker, and some new models even though those are the first-generation of such models (e.g. 2.7, 8, 12). *shrug*.

In summary, the BRKT knives were prototypes and do not qualify as a "generation" at all ;) The EDC-4 is a hybrid: production but also prototype for the 4.1, and since there is not another EDC-4 generation, I suppose we could call it "first-gen" :) Then came the pre-starter production models that comprise the main body of "first-gen" knives, including the 2nd-run GSO-10s. And NOW we have 2nd-gen :D

Hmm... maybe that is all a bit complicated...

Thanks for the information Chiral!
That explains why Survive refers to the New Spec and Old Spec knives as being before and after 2015.
I did not know that there were so few of the convex ground knives built.
