Mine is one of the earlier 44's - and yes it is black.

And the package was received yesterday, but haven't had a chance to open yet, as I just got it out of the mailbox this morning - looking forward to using a firesteel. I've used the older magnesium blocks, as well as magnesium metal scraps I used to scrounge from chemistry lab
