Hi Caine, I'm sure I replied to your question when you first asked, but no worries.
I actually make these guards from scratch using brass bar.
Cut a piece of 3/4 inch by 1/4 inch thick about 2 and a 1/2 inches long.
For a single finger guard, you just make it shorter, the steps are the same.
Drill and square out the tang slot.
Make sure you put a little taper on the front of the tang slot at the top and bottom.
(Hard to see in this pic,but it is there.)
This is so the guard will slide all the way up to the blade, and reduce the stress riser effect.
Yes these do have a radius on the blade/tang junction, not much, but it is there, despite what many may think or say.
(The radius on the D2 version is far more substantial.)
These pics are of the actual knife in the top pic.
Assembled and glued up,starting the rough shaping.
All done by hand using files and rasps.
The rear of the guard is done first, then make everything else flow into that.
This is the way I saw the guys at Randall Made do them, only they use bench mounted grinders and slack belt sanders.
I do them the way 'ol Bo did them in the beginning,by hand.
Each handle is different,I could not make two exactly the same even if I wanted.
Shape the front of the guard to follow the curve of the rear.
Take your time,no rush.
Rough sanding using strips of 120 grit backed with masking tape.
After this step, sand using lighter grits and wet/dry 1200/1500 to remove scratches, polish the guard and pommel, good to go!
I also removed the powdercoat, but that is up to you.
Post some pics of your project when you can,and if you have any queries dont hesitate to ask.
Hope this helps.
