cedar slab now a sofa end table

Very nice. I hear cedar furniture smells nice. :)

How much of that old baccy barn Oak you got left? I bet you could make some seriously saught after stuff with that. There are many people out there with some big wallets with a pure love of tobacco history and all the various forms. Something like a pibe rack/cabinet with tobacco drawers would be winner and make a pretty penny. Naturally it would takes ages to do but damn I'd have bought it for a few hundy a year or so ago!

Been having fun but haven't been as productive due to kidney surgery that took me out for a few weeks. Got the new grinder working, got 6" and 12" contact wheels (I can't believe I have been using a flat and slack alone to shape handles). Just got a small wheel set and those are going to be used on just about every knife. Prior I was using a mandrel I made to sand on the drill press. Just a solid 5/8" steel rod with a slot cut in it. Double over a strip of sand paper and voila! I could sand smaller radius curves. It did work very well, so here's a picture-

Also just finished my first santoku in a while. .091 AEB-L, I stabilized and dyed this maple. I like the look. P_20170611_152154_vHDR_Auto.jpg P_20170611_152206_vHDR_Auto.jpg P_20170611_152219_vHDR_Auto.jpg P_20170611_152243_vHDR_Auto.jpg

Got myself a vinyl cutter, (Silhouette Portrait), will use it to replace the laser engraving service I used the last few years to add names or logos to blades, had success almost from the get go, managed to cut size 12 font flawlessly and size 10 with minor errors which may be due to my inexperience.
Here I cut one of my stencils (not that I need I have hundreds, just for comparison) perfect!

A few I just finished up
Worm groove Texas Trapper

Toxic Green featherweight 1.5oz

Amber bone standard jack

And a camel bone Lannys Clip
Stan those are wonderful.
The Texas Trapper is a stunner

That looks both badass and stylish at the same time. I think that might be my favorite knife I've seen from you so far. Nice work.

They all look amazing. Have to say the Lanny's Clip is my favorite out of this bunch.

I love the scales on that one!
I'm quite looking forward to a good supply of sheep horn once we start raising merinos.

I'd agree something like a slotted brass or stainless guard would probably look better, but you executed that one well enough that it doesn't look bad

A local lady dropped by the shop, in early May with a section of steel plate in her hand. She said, "this is a section of the fantail off the USS Stark FFG-31. She was attacked by two Iraqi jets, which fired two missiles into her starboard side, killing 37 crewmen. This happened in 1987.
"My brother was one of those sailors killed that day." "Can you make me a knife out of this piece of steel"?
Sure! After spark testing and finding the steel to be low carbon, not hardenable, I told her what I could do, San Mai. Here are a few pics of whats been accomplished so far. The blade will be auctioned off at the annual meeting of the crew and their families at next years get together in Florida, her home port.
The rough grind and heat treatment is finished. I'm looking for ways to use some other pieces of the ship's fantail in the handle. Something hot blued with silicone bronze might work. I'll post pictures of the finished knife if there is any interest. Fred

Absolutely want to see the finished knife, Fred. What an awesome piece of history and a very nice tribute to a fallen sailor.

Finished this up. I know, the finger guard thing doesn't make sense and I wouldn't have done it if it wasn't requested.

Love that hamon! Guard doesn't look bad. Not what I would have done but the customers always right! And that horn is awesome!

Thank you!

I started another project. I've been wanting to make a tanto like blade with a bowie style handle and guard for some time, since I've seen a few well known makers make some stunning bowies with Japanese style handles. I cut out some blanks to do this but when I started grinding my mind drifted a bit and I ended up doing this. I'm not sure if I like it. I know it isn't perhaps a terribly useful knife. I'm wondering if you think it's cool. Because if it's cool, I'll finish it like this. If it's stupid, I'll just finish that hollow grind out and go with my original plan.

But I think I think it's cool? Haha. It would make a pretty sweet bayonet anyway. You tell me. This is pre-heat treat.
