A couple 501 questions

During the assembly, I think there is a fine line between having the pins tight enough to hold long term, and going a little too tight and cracking the wood scale.

I can't argue with that...
 
I think I read they don't glue when they use pins, it's one or the other. Anyone know if that is right?
