Air Rifle for raccoons/skunks

i dropped a coon with my sheridan with 1 shot to the head. it was dead before it hit the ground.

I'm a fan of the CCI CB Caps. I've also used the Remington Subsonic rounds. As everyone has mentioned, they won't cycle a semi-auto action, but with an accurate rifle it's not much of an issue...

I could not agree more-very quiet with punch--we used to do the prairie dogs with the CB caps, the slug hitting the dog made more noise than the gun going off--great in residential areas. A word of advice when shooting skunks put one behind the shoulder into the heart-lung area, most of the time-- no spray, they may move on a little but will eventually lay down and take their dirt nap. Put one in the head and you just hit the go button and they will spray every time...Steve

With the extra power of your modded model and precise shooting, it can be done. But, the coons I've seen shot with a spring powered rifle (around 800-1000fps, .22 and .177) in the body while treed, absorbed many pellets and wound up walking down the tree where the dogs killed them.

I would go with a crossbow. A racoon can be on steroids and PCP but it will still go down. :D:D

I tried a box of these in my 10/22:

They cycled the action just fine. However, out of the standard carbine barrel (18.5"), they were nearly as loud as a hyper velocity. If you listened real close, they were just barely quieter, and lacked the ballistic crack. I don't think they were quiet enough to make a real difference. Out of a long barreled .22, I have no idea, but not a shorter barreled one.

Make sure you take a tape measure to your 10/22. Federally, it's supposed to be at least 26" long.

the sheridan is a pump air rifle and not spring powered so its possible to kill a coon with a new one.

It is important to remember that even with POWERFUL airguns they are not powerful compared to firearms. Shot placement is KEY! Stick a pellet in the brain and you will drop them first shot. You really need to practice and know your guns trajectory.
