Am I weird for cutting my steak and chicken with a folder?

OK. Nothing wrong with that. But why are you asking if we think its weird then?

And has been said before...if your restaurant knife needs to be that sharp maybe it's time to stop eating at Texas Roadhouse.

Had steak and eggs at a diner. Gf said you really are weird so I made the post.

Pick it up and chew it off like a dog. (add a few growls and shake your head) Then the girlfriend will have something to gripe about. :D

I think it's dependent on context, like others have said: okay at a picnic, but you have to be ready to be a bit of a pariah in nice company.

Personally, I save this behavior for when I'm together with other nuts, and we appreciate the ridiculous idea of cutting steak with a framelock or a battle mistress. Usually deep in the forest.

This is the best self-conscious reverse troll that I have ever seen. Good on you.

Or use a Leatherman squirt.

Too late shiny! He pinnahed the thread before you could! You snoozed and lost!

OK. Not Texas Roadhouse like you said in the OP. Diner.

Why didn't you just tell her this? (Like you told us when we said it was weird.)

It does happen at Texas roadhouse also. Just happened to be in a diner on this occasion.

You are not weird at all, It is common in Japan to bring your own knife or chopsticks. Kershaw even makes a personal folding steak knife, it even comes with its own carrying case.

OP you left yourself open to let others believe you care of their opinion without giving your own on the issue.

Saying that "it's not weird because they do it in Japan" is pretty hilarious. I love Japanese culture, but it is deeply weird to a North American. Deeply. Weird. Don't ask me to to give you links. :)

Thing that always gets be about anything food/knife related here in GKD, is that folks will go on and on raving about the "right knife for the job" and then use something like a folding Griptilian on food. Like a high quality, "proper" knife for eating or food prep doesn't exist.

This place is crawling with makers who would LOVE to make somebody bellyaching about restaurant knives a fixed steak knife out of their favorite steel and handle material. It would be the right tool for the job and wouldn't get the looks that whipping out your CS at Applebees or wherever we are talking about gets.

Don't get it. Mystery.

I didnt think anything of it until my gf said it for about the 5th time. Still gonna use my knife. My knives are to be used ☺

Knives are for cutting stuff.
Food is stuff to cut.
Knife is right tool for the job.
Simple. :)

If someone said they got weird looks while using their two-person crosscut saw at The Keg, then I'd say they should have been using something else. :D

I think unsheathing a custom fixed blade at the dinner table would draw just as many looks :D

Is it weird to bring your own chop sticks?

Well in that 'case' ... (no pun intended):

Whilst my above pic was from the cabin (I dont make a habit out of whipping out my equipment/knives in public on a regular basis - at least not often at restaurants but to each his own), I have purchased a set of titanium chop sticks with their own carrying case and do bring them along when I know, Sushi is on the menu.

What can I say, I like Sushi.

I have quality utensils (and you know we like our quality knives/utensils) and nobody cares an iota.

But I digress - back to the OP:
I can already now see the next (inane) thread (not saying this thread is inane at all) -

"If you should eat a steak in your local restaurant, which knife would be optimal for the purpose, pls help me choose!!??"

I say a PERRIN!

I've got a Shun Higo No Kami folding steak knife I use for "eatin' out" Doesn't raise an eyebrow, but then again I don't frequent any restaurants one might consider "classy".

How about using this as a reason to get a new knife?
Maybe a traditional or a KAI Shun higo-no kami?

I have only seen this version in one other location.
The one I commonly see is the one I posted above. Is this an updated model?
The alloy used on the one you posted is 420j2, and the one I show above is vg-10.

That being said, I like the blade shape of this one, but prefer the alloy in the one I posted.
