Wait. So your answer to

"Am I weird for cutting my steak and chicken with a folder?"

is

"Opinel"?

Sure. A lot more in the OP than just a question. He's noting that his GF is telling him he's weird and that he's getting looks for using his folder.

His experience is similar to mine. Some of my knives generate odd looks if used in restaurants.

The Opinel 8 or 9 is super usable as a table knife and never generates looks if I use it at restaurants. I think a key to this is that is looks like a regular steak knife when open.

Large Sodbusters also seem to generate relatively few glances. Again, I think the key is that when deployed, they look familiar - like a normal steak knife.

YMMV.

Define weird, better yet, who cares. Yes you're weird. It's more fun to be weird.

I don't do it with a Manix 2 or such, but I have no problem using a traditional like a GEC 73. Get a cup of coffee afterwards, turn the cup over, and touch up the edge. No worries about the plate 👍

Enjoy life. It's short

^^^This!

Someone needs to come up with a folding edc cutting board that you can whip out at the restaurant and put between your steak and the ceramic plate to protect the edge of your knife.

They already did (well, not the folding variation).

Trangia cutting board. I use this when camping; it does double duty for when using it as a cutting board and for protecting the non-stick finish on the Trangia pan (an inexpensive pan which is far better than the old 'sticky' Trangia pan) and for when keeping cooking/eating utensils in the pan for storage when underway.

A small diameter board - you can paint a smily face on in, EDC it IWB and be the life of the party when using the board/slipping it under your serving.

I'm with the OP. Go ahead and do it. It's your knife and your food. For those who think it's a way of drawing attention to yourself, why are you watching other people eat and deciding whether or not they are normal instead of paying attention to your own food and what is going on at your own table. That is weird.

For those who are familiar with A.G. Russell, he sells a folding steak knife because he hates to see folks messing up the edge on their high dollar custom folders cutting steak on a glass plate, and he doesn't much care for restaurant knives. A.G. has more class than just about anyone I know, and if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

There is also the smaller even more EDC/pocket friendly board in the Trangia Meal Kit:)

I wonder if it could also be used as a frisbee? Perfect for backyard steak cookouts. :D

He could be selling it to make money, because that's his business....I doubt he's selling at a big loss ...

it's still weird....I've never seen a woman or child who couldn't make do with the restaurant supplied cutlery.

Steak, no!

Chicken? Who cuts chicken?

ROFL, In where I live I would be hesitant to use my folder (major city) but otherwise don't see a reason not to. Have seen lots of YT videos about meetings ppl have at restaurants during BladeShow. All take out their folders and its hilarious to use a huge chunk of beefy folder to spread butter on your bread. lol

The full size one works well once you put an actual edge on it (well, complete reprofiling); the factory edge would be good for digging at rocks, but not for cutting anything.

The small one just has no redeeming features, other than being small enough to stick in a pocket or around your neck.
It's 0.050" thick behind the edge, on a knife less than 3.5 inches in length!

Damn... sharpened pocket shovel!

Gotta agree with the girlfriend. No doubt she understands that the ceramic plate will wreak havoc on your edge, and that a folder and food is a recipe for food gunk all over the works of the knife.
 Y'all worry too much about making edges dull.
The gunk, you might have something there though.

Me? I don't think so. I do it constantly.

Next you'll tell me this is weird:

:D

Was part of a review and not something I normally do, but no one cared at all.
Not...at...all.

I got no attention, negative or positive.

I always want to cut my food with my edc. But I just hate dragging a perfect edge across a flat ceramic surface. As a sharpener I just can't stand it.

I think it's weird by definition since it's uncommon practice, I've considered sharpening the restaurants knives in the restroom.. that'd be maybe too weird though, I prefer the texture of a very clean cut also I dislike sawing like a madman for a bite.. a personal steak knife is a good solution though.. good ideas

It's not weird.
The Misses went custom for my first Father's Day gift.

Suwanee River (Nighthaxan) custom in his Oh Mai! mix.

Good looking knife. I believe you might relate to my earlier Perrin post.

Hah, excellent San Mai side step:thumbup:

I do agree, it is rather nice looking and it has caught a few compliments.

The Misses is rather fond of sushi (as am I), so for Christmas she got a pair of custom Ti chopsticks (pics to follow).
I had to specify to Charles that I am a Butcher, and do not abuse my knives and I wanted it ground thinner BTE than he normally does since it was going to be a "Dinner and Occasions knife.

Thanks for the compliments, I am right there with you on your mindset.
