Any Winkler fans?

Managed to meet up with Kevin Estela at Blade and grab one of the very limited (24 total, I think he said?) signature series Mentors. Got a copy of Kevin’s new wilderness survival book too that my son and I will definitely enjoy working through.

Those Mentors look sweet. It would be great to see them as a catalog item some day. And for the Knight collabs to return!

It’s a great model, don’t quote me but I believe Kevin is working on another preorder right now with a couple of different handle options.

I second you on the Knight collabs, they’ve gotten harder and harder to find.

I posted earlier in this thread that I couldn't find a Winkler axe. I followed the advice fellow members provided and I located an axe and a knife. It was expensive but I bought the axe off one website and the axe is absolutely perfect. I picked up the knife on a different website and I am disappointed with it. There are a couple of bad spots in the stain. That being said it is a really nice knife. I emailed Winkler some pictures so hopefully they will take care of the problem.

The spots you're referring to must be on the other side? The side in the pic looks fine to me.

Regardless, I'd rub some wicked wax (or Ballistol) into the wood and use the shit out of it. 👍

I wouldn't put anything on the wood until the problem is identified. The fix might be as simple as applying bit more finish to the wood, and putting oil or wax on it could make that difficult......but seeing the issue would be a good start.
Wood is a natural material and its not always perfect. Sometimes the finish doesn't take to the wood in some spots as well as others or the wood will have an unusual appearance, maybe odd grain or coloration or figuring. Thats just part of using natural materials, and most makers will tell you straight up that this is not a defect but just a unique look caused by it being a natural material.

Potentially a crack.....Unlikely but possible........🤔
There's no problem to identify nor is it a crack... it's mineral streaks in the wood.

If you enhance the picture and focus on the RnD you will see those streaks are prevalent as well.

No, just wood grain. Thats what stained maple looks like.....

Seems to me what the OP is referring to is that the tribal markings seem to be discolored for some reason, they are not dark like you would expect if stained.

Correct, the tribal marking appears not to have any stain in it. The line on the other side may be the stain taking to the wood but I would bet not (but then what do I know). I have other knives with wood handles that aren't marked like that.

Is it not stained or is there something like buffing compound in the markings?
The yellowish lines in the wood is just the way the stain is exposing the differences in the wood grain. You can see the same lines in the pictures I posted above. Its natural material, you are going to see this in most wood handles that have some figuring (ie not cheap bland straight grain wood) , and Winkler will tell you the same thing.....
As to the tribal markings, try a using tooth brush and see if they clean up. If they don't, and the stain is weak in there, it takes about 30 seconds with some walnut stain and a small rag to fix it.......

For the moment I am just going to wait and see what Winkler has to say.
Obviously, that's your choice.

Consider:

Maple is awesome. Strong.

Maple loves to show its grain. She’s a show-off, really.

Winkler chose well. I prefer cherry or walnut, yet Winkler knows what he's doing!
