April 2023 Buck of the Month Granadillo Handled Brass Bolster 113 Skinner w/ S45VN Blade

Is s45 and s30 that important to buck collectors? I don't see anyone framing this 113 and mounting it on a wall. Not that it isn't a nice or high quality, but to the average eye, it looks like a wood handled knife. My point is, these will most likely be used, or stored under the bed. What was the need for s45, that would require the price jump? When I am outdoors, I like a carbon knife, that is easy to clean and sharpen. I have never had to strike a flint with a knife, but I use knives on ferrous rods all the time. Even my most abused knives don't have rust on them. What is the need for s45 when you offer all your knives in s30 or better? Seems to me like high end steels are more for the fidget spinner crowd.
s35vn was supposed to be easier on tooling for the makers while still keeping close enough of the attributes of s30v. s45vn was the next progression forward. brought better corrosion resistance. the article below covers most of the changes.....

here's an article on it from the bf PhD in metallurgy on it. good read.....

I like and collect different steels, but dont own any fidget spinners myself.....😁

I don’t have a 113 and I’ve thought about getting one for edc and this would be a great edc fixed blade but the price is making me think I could buy two standard versions for less.

I’m not that trigger happy about this one, no itch so no scratch.

Well, I succumbed to the wiles of the 113. After declaring I would not, I have one on order!

I am not familiar with Granadillo wood, but decided to take the risk. As far as I can tell, the wood seems to be similar to Desert Ironwood or Mexican Bocote in that the grain can range from totally gorgeous to kind of meh - I will have to wait and see when it arrives. I may have to order some new leather cord for this one's lanyard.

(I guess my Alpha Hunter will have to wait until next month...)

I look forward to some pictures of it.
👍

I am anxious to see some pictures of others' knives. They should be arriving today? for those who ordered right away.
Here is mine (in my usual sterile way of taking pictures). Received it by FedEx today. Don't know why they rushed it with FedEx. I am a little put off by how small the handle is. I think I like the sheath better than the knife. I have a little buyer's remorse, I'm afraid. But off into the collection it goes.

Edit: To me, it is not recognizable as any special kind of wood. It looks like wood. There isn't anyone that is going to say, "Oh, look at that knife. And, wow, it's made with granadillo, isn't it?"

Edit 2: And the sheath doesn't say where it is made. I guess if it were made in the USA, it doesn't have to. But one would think they would stamp it as made in USA, since so many are not.

Edit 3: The handle is the same size roughly as a 112 handle. But it seems like it should be larger, due to the larger width of the blade.

Edit 4: Some entertainment to summarize my review:

I once bought a knife from Buck.
When I got it, I said, "WT@."
The handle's so small,
Not a Special, at all.
But still, the knife does not suck.

Thanks for posting H Happy Hippo ! I am liking the wood on yours. I have several 113s so know what to expect as far as size. I am guessing that the sheath is US made since they did not clarify on their website. (I think the lighter colored sheaths are usually US made. Someone correct me if I am wrong.)

I like 113's. I have a number of them.
I've probably used a 113 on more deer than any other knife.
I like the size. It's a capable knife.

I really want to like this one, well I do actually.......
But what's the point?
I'm not a steel snob. I actually like 420hc.

I've looked at this knife many times and it doesn't interest me.

I was really hoping folks would get theirs and post pictures of really great knives.......

I'm still hoping.
😎

Mine arrived today! I am very pleased with the wood on this one! Nice character. Maybe not as dramatic as Desert Ironwood, but I was not expecting that. It has some lighter areas and darker areas. (The lighter areas are not the yellowish color, which is one of the things I was worried about.) My concerns about the wood grain have been allayed. Of course ymmv.

I have several 113s, so this one will fit right in. It is a little pricey though, but I would order again.

And it bit me! After all the nice things I typed up about it. When I took it out of the sheath for one more look before hitting enter, I cut myself. I never learn...LOL!

I usually show a picture of the blood carnage after a knife bites me. I think it happens to me more than everyone else.
