Are "Rambo" type knives practical?

What in the holy heck are those spikes for? I've always wondered.

Side guards . Rambo-style sawbacks are awesome . Useful, intimidating...I like them .

Originally they were so that you could use the knife as a grappling hook.

Eureka! So I presume that the grapple spikes are not meant to be attached until they are needed?
