axes of the movies

In the untouchables Kevin Costner uses what Im sure was a then current ( movie debuted in '87 ) Mann / Collins narrow poll Michigan to bust those crates with the red maple leaf on them which are supposed to contain alcahol.

The axe is wrong, but so is the red maple leaf on the crates which Canada did not use as the time IIRC.

Not sure i will get to this one

I don't have any screen snaps or whatnot, but I did stumble upon a documentary called "Dead River Rough Cut." Yankee Josh Yankee Josh outta be very interested if he hasn't already seen it. It's about a couple fellers living in the Maine backwoods, living the woods life. Looks like about the 70's or so. They trap, log, etc., enjoy the solitary lifestyle, talk about all sorts of different things that are still pertinent. Lots going on with the stuff we're often talking about here in the axe forum.

Recommended. I believe it's freely available on the internet, though I watched it on Amazon Prime. These guys are some real Mainers!

I think you'll enjoy the snot out of it. It's one of those movies where in the surface you expect it to be boring, but it's just absolutely captivating. Some of the existential stuff these backwoods guys are talking about back in the 70s are things that people are still talking about today. And some of the things that they said, some of their insights seemed like they were aimed square at me!

Not sure where your at with axe/hand made shovels but if you have not come across this one...i think you will enjoy it as well.
I will be checking out your Maine recommendation tonight or tomorrow. It sounds like i will be downloading it for a reference

I'll have to go find a nice popple :D And an appropriate hand adze, which I am sad to say I do not currently have. Though I have been looking, I've not seen one of the size and shape I'm after for a good price. I can certainly make do with gouges, I imagine.

Not a movie, but this guy seems to be holding a kent pattern axe. I'm not sure why he was using it to fell trees, though. Maybe the same reason "Pa" Ingalls and Charles Bronson (Magnificent 7) were using broadaxes/ship building axes to split wood.

Just pointing out that the trees were felled with a saw not an axe.
