Ban of Rosewood, Cocobolo, et al---Effect on Traditionals?

And there it is in one little sentence.

It is not just tropical hardwoods and rhino horn viagra that they are trashing.

In the US, we are witnessing the extinction of an entire species of our native hardwood - the ash. All because of a little chinese bug called the emerald ash borer.

It came over here in wood pallets used to ship their cheap garbage because they are too cheap or corrupt, or both, to follow the quarantine and treatment rules we have in place.

A good illustration of how ineffective these well-intentioned regulations are when people just don’t give a damn.

Just because of the extinction of the beautiful ash tree, I am trying to not buy anything made in china. It’s not easy, but maybe more effective than not buying a cocobolo GEC.

I think the same.
I am not sure how we got so sensitive to "bashing", or why it seems to apply to one country only, but the truth is the truth and facts are facts, whether or not we are "allowed" to say it here. It seems like anything other than glowing praise is considered bashing now.

I suspect we will continue to see more restrictions and regulations of all natural materials in the future.

I once saw an entire office lined with ivory—and it made me sad to remember that an enormous pile of it was destroyed in front of the international media in the early 90’s. So many elephants died for nothing, it seems. And yet locals earn money in much of Africa while protecting herds and guiding tourists on safari. I once saw a video on YouTube of a swimmer being “rescued” by a baby elephant, and thought to myself that if wild pops of these guys go extinct then we should too.

I wasn’t sure what he meant either—if it was political, ethnic sensitivity, or if bashing of the PRC could lead to hacking attacks—but either way I’m not gonna argue with mod.

Not trying to argue, just have a rational discussion of the facts.

I agree. We are not suffering the lack of cocobola yet—but British and European customs are so aggressive towards knives except in the east that if they don’t seize it, tacking on $100 or equivalent in euros seems unnecessary. The US is getting stricter towards imports in general going through its postal system. I don’t know how much of it is genuine concern or petty tit for tat.

Some locals and very few at that in my opinion.... Probably means little in the big picture of survival, but everything helps. Diversification is the key. I don't equate human feelings toward elephants or any wild animal. But all the same, I do not want to see any animal go extinct at this point in time. Education (locals), hunting and conservation are the keys to saving them. It may not be possible due to organized poaching. I would also include rather vigorous enforcement.

Edit: Added a few things to better explain myself.

That's bashing.

It doesn't only apply to China. The guidelines make the point that bashing any country, religion etc is off topic for this sub-forum. There's a place for political discussion. This isn't the place. Glowing praise is not a requirement for posting in this sub-forum.

See above.

Back on topic, please. If you have questions or comments please feel free to message me.
I try very hard to let the discussions proceed without my input as a mod. When they are going off track or outside the guidelines I'm required to step in.

I want African elephants to flourish in the wild and not go the way of the American bison/buffalo, but that is where they're headed. People and wild elephants don't mix very well overall.

As far as Rosewood and the variants, I can live without them just like I can live without elephant ivory. Elephant ivory is a novelty to me. But I consider it a resource to be managed and used.

Hey Peregrine~ sorry! Don’t mean to run afoul of the regs.

Just to clarify, if I may. The fault lies with us, perhaps more than the suppliers.
The market will always react to meet a demand.

The above is from the guidelines. If you need to refresh your memory here's a link; Guidelines For The "Traditional Folders & Fixed Blades" Sub-Forum.
If it continues, I'm not going to move posts. I'll just close the thread. Thanks.
