I recall, far back in antiquity - even before the arrival of the prophet Steve Irwin who came to inform the world of the horrifying majesty of Australian fauna - National Geographic (I think?) had these card sets featuring all kinds of obscure animals and a brief dossier, on the back, with their vital statistics and some interesting facts. In any case, the card for the Echidna had the most adorable damn picture of one on it and I've been smitten with them ever since. 😍

Additionally, in Grade 7, my class had to choose a class mascot and a class color - we wound up as the Group 5 Plaid Wombats. The school, South Miami Middle School (may a pox be upon them), refused to pay the additional cost to have our class shirts printed on flannel and so, we went without. Instead, we just wore flannel shirts from K-Mart and enthusiastically shouted wombat-focused slogans at school gatherings.

My wife loves them. She follows some type of wombat rescue in Australia on instagram, I made a donation for her birthday. From what I’ve gathered is they’re akin to our armadillos. Sort of hapless and often getting thumped by cars, unfortunately.

You definitely don’t want to hit one in a car though, it’s like running over a small boulder! I’ve seen more than one totalled car on the side of the road with a dead wombat a few yards behind it.

Farmers hate them, in cleared farming land they cause really bad erosion with their burrows.

Echidna’s are cool little animals too and I love watching them in the bush. What’s not to loves about an animal that lays eggs and feeds its young milk though!
