It’s present in the Pacific Northwest too. Seems to happen when we’ve had some rain to saturate the ground and then the temperature drops a bit below freezing. Kinda cool looking and the kids liked to walk on it and crunch it when they were little. One of the strangest things I've ever seen, I call it ground ice, not sure what it's actually called, but never saw this until moving to the east coast

Yeah, it's pretty wild stuff. We get a ton of that exact weather out here in Maine, so it occurs a lot - today's version was very deep. I still remember seeing it for the first time ~5 years ago, it caught me totally off guard, as this doesn't ever happen in the Rockies. Good to know it happens on the other coast, cheers! It’s present in the Pacific Northwest too. It is. I had identify the location in my post, but it appears that part was inadvertently edited out. Those photos were taken over the summer at Lake Chopaka located in Okanagan County Washington State. My oldest brother and I enjoy hiking the ridge lines around the lake. No trails, we just ascend the ridge lines by trial and error. We are a couple of old “fuds”, so we carry our traditional gear; knives, revolvers, walking sticks, and water. What the pictures can’t depict is the strong smell of sage and pine. It’s glorious.Beautiful area.
I have run into that just about every winter here..One of the strangest things I've ever seen, I call it ground ice, not sure what it's actually called, but never saw this until moving to the east coast

Looks like a good hiking areaWas able to get out for a hike today, 6.3 miles. Kinda wanted to do more, but got done with the trails I chose and that's what it was, and that was OK with me. Chilly at right around freezing and very gray and bland, but it's my first hike after the winter solstice, just nice to get in some miles and not be at work.

Beautiful country , great Demko , and even bagged a pair of tourists ...sweet !Trekking around the eastern sierras with the kids and pup. This area is called Alabama Hills and is just down the road from Mt Whitney. Demko AD20s was the knife in pocket.
