Photos Blades on Hikes

Unstable air was blowing through the entire day with periods of drizzle/rain. Gust up to 50mph kept the wind chill in the 30s. Perfect temp to hike but my wife is frozen all the time!😀 Going to get progressively warmer the rest of trip and hopefully mid 60s Tuesday and Wednesday. We’re at 4000 feet so that’s decent this time of year.

We rode 28 miles skirting Carrizo Canyon trying to overlook Goat Canyon trestle bridge.https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hiking-san-diego/goat-canyon-trestle-hike/ Been there before but came up from the southern trails, tried coming from north today and just couldn’t connect. Wife ended using up her energy hiking (in boots)where we couldn’t ride. Low on battery we ended up following a game trail across raw terrain..awesome day looking back. Got my wife the Surron (33inch seat height &125lbs) a few years ago for slab riding and single track. It sports a 38 AH battery at about 7 hp..top speed with 54 tooth sprocket belt drive off motor sprocket/ chain jack shaft is 39 mph. Her Yamaha 450 (60hp) is 245lbs and 38inch seat height was a chore in that type of riding. After my back surgery in 2023 I bought the Talaria , It’s got a gear box with 45 AH battery and almost double the horsepower of the Surron..with top speed close to 52mph. Added direct mount stem, billet pegs ,and new rubber on both bikes. I can lead KTM 300 and similar bikes through the tight single track and slabs. Really amazing technology and so far surprisingly reliable! I charge on the motor home gen(about 3 hours if empty) or use an Anker c1000 with expansion battery with 400 watts of solar panels. Been riding since I was 5 and as damaged as I am…these electric motos really let us explore deep into backcountry.

Here’s some pictures from today’s ride..we made it to Anza-Borrego overlook. You can see the goat canyon trestle bridge zoomed in one pic. IMG_7280.jpegIMG_7283.jpegIMG_7284.jpegIMG_7285.jpegIMG_7291.jpegIMG_7293.jpegIMG_7294.jpegIMG_7295.jpegIMG_7296.jpegIMG_7297.jpeg

DA170 DA170 Are you riding in a national park?

Been riding my whole life also and the KTM 990 Adventure is getting a little heavy at 53 yo. Considering electric.

No national parks but all BLM and State parks where riding is allowed. You can license these with proper equipment in California as a moped.

I hear you on getting older! I’m turning 57 in June and have had multiple spinal fusion surgeries since 2019. I used to be able to throw around a 450 without even thinking but those days are gone. These smaller lightweight electric motos are unbelievable with torque to climb any obstacle. I’m 6’2 and 190 lbs and have no issues hitting multiple slab step ups. For this type of riding (tight single track with mixed slab obstacles) it’s tough to beat. Their limitations are larger whoops , deep sand/washes , And any open terrain where you’d want more speed and range.

These are very capable machines and keep getting more powerful (new MX5 is 15 to 22 kw depending on voltage) but are still classified as “pit bikes “. I’m looking at the full size Stark Varg (65-80hp) enduro for desert and other open areas. You’d love the Stark as it’s a beast and only around 300lbs..maybe less!

Here’s my charging “station of the generator for both bikes!

Sorry for clogging this thread up but I thought these last pictures would be interesting. Made it to one of the official historical sites through the back trails and some interesting info on the railroad .Seems current California High speed rail isn’t alone in high cost projects. Those bikes look like so much fun! Thanks for posting the pics. I'm intrigued!

I popped out of the trail system in a different exit then I normally use and saw this sign..typical Cali BS! You have to laugh though 🤪😁

California: You are not allowed to do anything fun at all while in this area paid for by your tax dollars. Have a great time!
The "stay on trails" thing kills me. You aren't even allowed to walk freely across ground of your choosing.... that state sucks.
