Boker "Tree Brand Classic" & Solingen made traditional knives

I bought a Böker Barlow last year through a dealer and returned it. It was definitely a nice knife but I was disappointed with the fact that shield was placed add an odd angle. Before returning it, I mailed Böker in Solingen about it and they told me that these sort of things are not considered as faulty production. I really tried to ignore it but at 80 euro or so, I couldn't get over it and returned the knife. That is my only experience with Böker. Even though I was disappointed with that particular Barlow, the overall quality was definitely there and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Böker at some point again.

Loving this Barlow !
Carried this little jewel all day

I was poking around on that site but was having a hard time getting all the options to load, no surprise given my poor internet speed. If Boker used a spear blade more often, they’d pretty much have any combo I might want covered. Great looking knife Ed. 😊👍

That is annoying, and I have several with slightly offset shields but not enough to bother me. I don’t mind the shield even on the Barlows, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them go back to the bolster stamp. I’m predicting they will. 😉👍

Thanks My Friend and I agree the Spear point is one of my favs no doubt.

Does the new ordering system allow you to delete the shield?
Nope, looks like you can pick between a silver or a black shield. No shield is not an option.

Also, it looks like these are only available in Europe. I can't make an account with a US address and my Boker USA login won't work.

It might be for the best because I can see myself going way down this rabbit hole. A spear point Barlow in stag would be a great start. Or maybe the curly maple...

Not sure if anyone said this already, but if you’re not too picky on covers and you shop around, you can find them at some dealers on clearance for pretty reasonable prices. Not quite as consistently quality as GECs I’ve seen, but def a cut above my Cases. I really like the loooooooong bolster on the barlows

I had the same experience Mark.

I didn’t see one John.

Thanks for the (disappointing) information, guys.
The shield is the only thing I don't like that much.
It doesn't bother me too much, but a delete option would be perfect.
I’ve got a feeling that they are going to stop putting shields on their Barlows, or at least offer some without. I say that only because the new Micarta Barlows do not have shields.

I recently was given a gift of the Boker 110250WB and the first thing I noticed was the horrid workmanship and finish. I wanted to understand where this knife was produced and after some research, I confirmed it was assembled in germany using chinese parts. The best source confirming this comes from this review from a boker collector:

If the shield says “SOLINGEN” on it, these are knives made in Solingen, Germany with German parts and materials. If the shield says “GERMANY” (as seen on this model), these are knives made at the same Boker factory in Solingen, Germany, but they are made with material/parts that were outsourced overseas. This means that the steel, the bone, and the brass was outsourced and then manufactured and put together in Germany.

Yep, that’s why in this thread we like to discuss only those Bokers with the Solingen stamp. They are made entirely in Germany and have far superior quality. 😊

I believe the Boker shields are glued in. I've had a couple fall out and re-glued them back in. If you have a crooked shield, you might try to gently pry it up, and if it comes off it can easily be re-glued on straight!

Really? I was under the impression that they were pinned. This has come up before and I’ve checked many of mine and thought I could see that they were pinned. Which ones have you had to glue back in? Maybe I need to look closer. 😊

Yeah, all of my current Barlows and my Trapper Uno have a pin visible inside the frame right below where the shield sits.

Maybe it was a change, and they used to glue the shields?

edit- just checked my two Boker Pen knives, they also have what looks like a pin below the shield.

I don't know about newer knives but as of about 3 years ago, the shields were not pinned. Note the post that I linked and the post right above it.
