"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I don’t know if the Okapi brand has been bought out again, but they have given their pocket knife products and website a complete facelift. I’m ambivalent about the hole in the blade, but I’m glad they went back to carbon steel for the ring-lock model. I sort of like the look of the other models - it seems to me they managed to “modernize” a traditional pattern without making it hideous. N690 is supposedly good steel, and they kept it in the $20 price range (in South Africa, anyway).

I would love to see a ring-lock with the green plastic handle, but I could make my own easily enough I suppose.

I emailed the company to see if they ship internationally. Hopefully they do.

I've seen a couple of foxes in my neighborhood, but not since I've started seeing coyote scat.
I have a theory for the abundance of foxes we've been seeing around here lately. They keep putting in new neighborhoods, and I think that the coyotes are getting squeezed out, which in turn puts the squeeze on the foxes, which leaves them little choice but to head into the neighborhoods. 40 years ago a fox in a neighborhood was a rare sight. Now we see them a couple times a month.

Yeah, fox, like coons seem to adapt to the suburbs pretty well. We're out in the sticks though, and we just started seeing coyotes here maybe 25 years ago. The fox have always been plentiful.

We've had plenty of rabbits around for 3 years now. Much more than normal. This year, foxes moved in. I haven't saw a fox in the daylight around my house in 10+ years, although I have heard them yipping during the night when the window is open. However, this year I've had 3 separate attacks on our chickens by fox during the day (once while I was mowing grass!). The fact that the fox wasn't afraid of me in the yard on a mower tells me it was likely a desperately hungry mother trying to feed her pups. I was fortunate to scare it off before it killed the chickens.

Last year, my neighbor back the road, had 22 ducks in the Spring. The foxes had all but 4 gone by Fall. Then, for some reason, they stopped disappearing. There are a bunch of ducklings, and 6 goslings waddling around back there now. We'll see how long they last.

My wife and I discussed our options. With a littler of fox growing up in our woods, it's just a matter of time before our entire flock is wiped out. We either let it happen, or spend the time and money to fence in a run for the birds. We enjoyed having them free-range the whole property, but we can't stop these predators from hunting. We've also been having hawk attacks as well. So we decided to fence in a 20 x 40 foot area attached to the chicken coop, and also birdnet the top of it to keep hawks away. The chickens will be sad at their new lack of freedom, but it's better than being dead.

Sometimes I feel like I'm spending $10,000 a year on chickens so I can save $4.00 on a dozen eggs. :p

Charlie and Jack, I hope you both heal quickly and fully. And Jack I hope you get some satisfaction through your legal action.

May you get satisfaction!!! Posh boarding school flavor!!!

waynorth waynorth Charlie I hope you are on the mend Mate.
Jack Black Jack Black Wishing you also a speedy recovery and devastating victory in the compo court against Dr Plummy-Chap.

The names Hans Delbruck and Abby Normal spring to mind.🫣

Thanks a lot fellers 🙂👍 Please accept my apologies for the very slow response 🙄

Yup screws ups are not fun, went for what was my fourth back surgery were they put rods above a past fusion, about a month later I was going insane from pain and kneck aggravation that increased with any physical activity or taking my son to a cold hockey rink, had a parent ask me to stay away thinking my head shakes was from drug abuse, after a year of this i went to see a specialist and was told rods were not set right, the original surgeon moved back to eastern Asia,so it is what it is.but it did get me into traditional knives lol.
I'm very sorry you are still suffering because of this incompetence 😒👍
It's been three days since my carpal tunnel surgery, and I removed the large bandage and washed it this morning. The incision is under the band-aid and only a centimeter long,
but look at the bruising! Still stiff and sore but much improved over the first two days.

Hope you're fully recovered now Jeff 👍
Rather than ask a robot, I place my trust in the knife community!! If anyone can help, I would appreciate it!! I have been trying to find a title for the (upswept drop-point) blade in this Russel, and Evan's renditions of it!! One person called it a "veterinary" blade, but with no published back-up reference!!!
If anyone can help me find an established name or description, I'd be grateful!!View attachment 2879188View attachment 2879177View attachment 2879178
Interesting question Charlie 🙂
Charlie, I would call it a trailing point skinner, because the tip is higher than the spine and the belly is tight for skinning.
It would make a terrific caping knife for precision skinning of hunting trophies.
And a good answer 🙂
Missing knives are painful!! I hope you both find them eventually!!

I've been missing my old curved Russell Barlow for a couple of months!! I don't remember ever taking it out of my knife room - (yes I have a dedicated room!)!! I've searched every drawer, cigar box and roll!! Where the heck is it??? 😮 o_O

safe is a matter of perspective, for example i can say its now so safe because ive forgotten where it is to the point where i cant lose it, because i cant even touch it

Were I walked my last dog a golden retriever/Rottweiler mix there were 3 separate fox dens with pups every spring, but one fox in particular always found himself in a fight with my dog I would say that they had about 7 or so dust ups,but the weird thing about the fox is it has more cat than dog in it's fighting style which led the fox to scratch and headbutt,it also a produced a blood curdling scream instead of a growl,I would then catch up and draw the dogs attention away before giving serious harm to the fox.
