Nate’s posted a detailed explanation somewhere in this subforum; What temp would ruin the edge?
I’ve been using a WS for what seems like 10 years. Primarily 6”+ blades. I have a dip tank I cool them between passes and never run it wide open.
Could just be lucky, I’ve never noticed any diminished cutting ability / edge retention.
Any particular sharpener recommended?
Basically, it doesn’t take much to overheat the very apex of the edge, because by definition, a really sharp edge has very little material at the apex, and powered sanders will easily overheat that 0.001” due to the friction, but you probably won’t even feel the ‘heat’ on the edge with your fingers.
IIRC, he mentioned 400f being the point where you would mess up the Delta heat treat (quite some time ago, I asked about sending a CPK for a DLC coating, but IIRC, it was applied at ~500f, which is a no-no for D3V).
As for recommended sharpeners, any of the manual options will do.
I’ve had the opportunity to try the WorkSharp Precision Adjust Pro, and can highly recommend it for anyone looking for a guided angle sharpening system who doesn’t want to pay the $5xx+ for something like a TSPROF or Wicked Edge, but I’ve also seen what looks like a Chinese TSPROF knockoff on Amazon that was “$12x?. No experience with it, though.
